Overview: Si sa che l’ultima guerra, e in particolare la Resistenza, hanno per lo più dato origine in Italia a storie di ‘uomini e no’, inclini a un’aspra sentenziosità. Nulla di meno congeniale a Landolfi, il quale scrisse febbrilmente la sua storia di guerra (questo Racconto d’autunno) nel 1946, ma giocando su tutt’altra tastiera. Qui un indefinito e sanguinoso conflitto fa da quinta a una vicenda di amore e morte che non sdegna nessuno degli attrezzi scenici del romanzo nero, dal ritratto ominoso agli animali demoniaci. E, al centro troviamo una ‘dark lady’ innocente e perversa, evocata per via necromantica, che ci appare una vera concrezione dell’eros landolfiano. Mai come in questo libro Landolfi si è abbandonato al puro romanzesco, senza turbare e frantumare la narrazione, anzi lasciandola fluire in una corrente rapinosa e ingannevole. Eppure, la perfetta adesione ai canoni del racconto fantastico adombra in questo caso l’insanabile ferita inflitta all’autore degli eventi. La guerra aveva infatti profanato il ‘covo di memorie’, il ‘Ricettacolo dei sogni’ di Landolfi: la nobile dimora di Pico, che aveva assistito alla stesura di tutte le opere della sua prima stagione ed era per lui una sorta di guscio protettivo. È questo il luogo tenebroso del Racconto d’autunno, trasformato dalle erbe selvatiche in un «gran tumulo verde», mentre attorno alla fantomatica figura femminile si addensa un «giallo leggermente abbrunato, come un bagno di funebre oro».

Really enjoyed this one. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
