Overview: “Bir bireyin eylemlerine, kaçışı olmayan, içselleşmiş bir otorite kılavuzluk ediyorsa politik özgürlüğün çok az anlamı vardır” diyen yazar bu kitabında “içselleşmiş otoriteyi” oluşturan mekanizmalardan biri olan eğitimi ele alıyor.Spring -esas olarak- iki eğitim modelinin varlığından söz ediyor: İlki düzen, plan ve yüksek verimlilik aracılığıyla toplumsal ilerleme arayan teknolojik ve rasyonalist model. Bu modele göre “toplum, verimli işleyiş hedefine sahip bir makine olarak görülür. İnsanlar, değerleri toplumsal makinenin pürüzsüz işleyişine katkılarıyla belirlenen ‘insani kaynaklar’ haline gelirler. Bu modelde, çocuğa üzerinde çalışılacak ve toplumun iyiliği için biçimlendirilecek bir nesne olarak yaklaşılır.” Bu modelin eğitim aracı olan okula Illich “iktidarın fahişesi” diyor. Bu modeli benimseyen psikolog, hırsızlık yapan yoksul insanlarla karşılaştığında “çalma alışkanlıklarının nasıl sona erdirileceği” sorusunu araştıracaktır.Spring’in Ferrer, Godwin, Rousseau, Marx, Freire, Illich, Stirner, Tolstoy, Reich ve Neill’in tezlerini tartışarak önerdiği ikinci modelde ise önemli olan düzen ve verimlilik değil bireysel özerkliğin artmasıdır. “Toplumsal değişimin hedefi, artan bireysel katılık ve toplumsal sistemin denetlenmesidir. Bu model, modern toplumsal kurumların gücünün büyük ölçüde halkın, bu kurumların otoritesini ve meşruiyetini kabul etme gönüllüğüne dayandığı inancına bağlıdır.” Bu modelin sorusu “bireyin toplumsal makineye nasıl uydurulacağı değil, insanların, kişisel tatmin olmadan çalışmayı ve özgürlüğü sınırlayan toplumsal otoriteyi neden kabul etmeye istekli olduklarıdır.” Bu modelin psikoloğu ise “neden bütün yoksul insanların hırsızlık yapmadığı” sorusuna cevap arayacaktır.Çocukların “kolay kontrol edilebilen verimli makineler” olarak değil “özgür, hayattan zevk alan” kişiler olarak büyümesinden yana olanlar için... “Spring’in kitabı benzersiz bir çalışma. Pretty good overall. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.
