Not illustrated. Excerpt: Khc Ho (Hn t:, ?917) was the Vietnamese Jiedushi of Tnh Hi qu[n from 907 to 917 succeeding his father Khc Tha D. During his reign, Khc Ho made several important social and administrative reforms including a new system of administrative division, the levelling of cultivated land tax and the abolishment of corve. Besides, Khc Ho maintained a discreet policy towards Chinese authorities and thus brought a period of stability and prosperity to his country. Khc Ho deceased in 917 and was succeeded by his son Khc Tha M who failed to keep the autonomy of Tnh Hi qu[n when he was defeated by the army of the kingdom of Southern Han in 923. However, Khc Ho's ruling is still considered a foundation for the administration of Vietnam in the early independent time afterwards. The date of birth of Khc Ho was unknown but he came from the Khc family which was a powerful clan with long history and tradition in Hng Ch[u, Cc B (now Ninh Giang, Hi Dng, Vietnam). In early 10th century, the head of Khc family Khc Tha D succeeded in taking over the control of Tnh Hi qu[n (now the northern part of Vietnam) and became the first Jiedushi of native origin that marked the beginning of the independence of Vietnam, because while the country still nominally belonged to the Tang Dynasty, it had now a status of autonomy with a native ruler who could decide matters without any interference from China. As the son of Khc Tha D, Khc Ho began to hold the position Jiedushi in 907 after his father's death and continue to consolidate the autonomy of the country. On the other hand, in old historical books such as the i Vit s lc or i Vit s k ton th, it was Khc Ho, instead of Khc Tha D, who was mentioned as the first member of the Khc family holdin... Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Will be looking for more from this author.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. A solid 4 stars from me.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Enjoyable weekend read.
