Overview: À l'occasion du centenaire de la naissance d'André Pieyre de Mandiargues, la collection Poésie/Gallimard réédite en deux volumes l'intégralité de son oeuvre poétique, soit l'ensemble des textes publiés par ses soins augmenté de quelques inédits. Aux côtés des romans, récits, nouvelles, pièces de théâtre et essais qui ont fait le renom de l'auteur de La Marge et du Musée noir, la poésie occupe une place essentielle, peut-être même centrale, tant elle semble, par bien des surgissements, surprises et courts-circuits, au coeur de toute l'oeuvre, à la fois comme révélateur intime et comme enjeu formel. Pieyre de Mandiargues a confié que s'il écrivait des poèmes c'était "dans l'espoir de ressentir à nouveau la fièvre qu'il avait éprouvée à la lecture d'Agrippa d'Aubigné, des élisabéthains, des romantiques allemands, de Coleridge, de Lautréamont et des surréalistes". Ces références, assez éclectiques, suggèrent une grande liberté quant au choix des thèmes et de leur transcription. On peut évoquer une tension, voire une contradiction, entre une inspiration qui laisse toute latitude à l'imaginaire et une écriture qui se veut précise et maîtrisée. André Pieyre de Mandiargues est un baroque qui ne répugne pas au classicisme. Ses poèmes se distinguent en cela et s'identifient aussitôt, comme si la plus chatoyante fantaisie langagière pouvait subtilement, et parfois avec perversité, se laisser entrevoir ou soupçonner sous une stricte parure. Incontestablement, l'oeuvre poétique de Pieyre de Mandiargues est à redécouvrir. Elle propose comme aucune autre dans le siècle cette conjonction des contraires qui ne brime pas la folie onirique au nom de la lucidité, qui ne submerge pas la visée âpre sous un déferlement verbal. "Bien moins que la dictée de l'inconscient, note-t-il, mais beaucoup tout de même, m'intéresse une certaine perfection du vers ou du verset, qui doit presque toujours au travail, sans doute, mais qui le rend incorrigible et pur comme le corps naturel dans sa nudité bouleversante, que l'on regarde avec amour."

I was pleasantly surprised. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Glad I picked this up.
