Overview: Στη Λυκόβρυση, ένα ελληνικό χωριό της Ανατολής, υπάρχει το έθιμο να γίνεται η αναπαράσταση των Παθών κάθε επτά χρόνια. Ο παπα-Γρηγόρης με τους προεστούς επιλέγουν τα πρόσωπα που θα λάβουν μέρος: το Χριστό θα υποδυθεί ο Μανολιός, ένας απλός βοσκός, τον Ιωάννη, ο Μιχελής, ο γιος του άρχοντα Πατριαρχέα, τον Ιούδα, ο Παναγιώταρος, τη Μαγδαληνή, η χήρα Κατερίνα. Αργά το απόγευμα, καταφθάνουν πρόσφυγες από ένα άλλο χωριό, καταδιωγμένοι από τους Τούρκους. Ζητούν βοήθεια, αλλά ο παπα-Γρηγόρης τους διώχνει, λέγοντας ότι φέρνουν μαζί τους επιδημία χολέρας. Οι πρόσφυγες, με επικεφαλής τον παπα-Φώτη, καταφεύγουν στο άγριο βουνό της Σαρακήνας. Τους βοηθούν μόνον ο Μανολιός, ο Μιχελής, η Κατερίνα, ο Γιαννακός και ο Κωνσταντής (οι δύο τελευταίοι επρόκειτο να υποδυθούν τους αποστόλους Πέτρο και Ιάκωβο). Μετά από την επιλογή του στο ρόλο του Χριστού, ο Μανολιός αλλάζει μέρα με τη μέρα. Χωρίζει την αρραβωνιαστικιά του και αποφασίζει να φτάσει σε όσο το δυνατόν μεγαλύτερη πνευματική, ψυχική και σωματική αγνότητα, με οδηγό τον παπα-Φώτη. Μάλιστα, στο πανηγύρι του προφήτη Ηλία υπερασπίζεται τους πρόσφυγες και μιλά για την αξία της αγάπης και του ελέους, προκαλώντας την αντίδραση των συγχωριανών του και την οργή του παπα-Γρηγόρη. Στο μεταξύ πεθαίνει ο Πατριαρχέας και ο Μιχελής αποφασίζει να μοιράσει την περιουσία του στους πρόσφυγες. Όταν εκείνοι έρχονται στη Λυκόβρυση να παραλάβουν τα κτήματα, ο παπα-Γρηγόρης κηρύσσει το Μιχελή ανισόρροπο και ξεσηκώνει τους ντόπιους. Μετά το βίαιο θάνατο του αδελφού του στη σύγκρουση που ακολουθεί, ο παπα-Γρηγόρης υποδεικνύει στον αγά το Μανολιό ως υπαίτιο όλων των συμφορών. Πετυχαίνει την καταδίκη του και την παράδοσή του στους εξαγριωμένους χωρικούς.
