Overview: Er war nie Mitglied der NSDAP und empfand sich als unpolitischen Menschen, auch wenn ihn Hitlers Auftritt bei den Olympischen Spielen 1936 begeisterte. Durch eine schwere Verletzung während des Polenfeldzugs 1939 begriff Rochus Misch die Grausamkeiten des Krieges und war froh, nicht mehr an die Front zurück zu müssen.Stattdessen katapultierte es ihn ins Zentrum der Macht: 1940 beginnt er als Kurier, Leibwächter, später auch als Telefonist für Hitler zu arbeiten. Mischs Dienstzimmer in der Berliner Wilhelmstraße 77 liegt nur wenige Schritte von Hitlers Wohnung in der Alten Reichskanzlei entfernt, bei vielen Aufenthalten seines Arbeitgebers auf dem Obersalzberg ist er dabei.Der Leibwächter beobachtet Heinrich Himmler und Albert Speer auf der Terrasse des Berghofs, er vermittelt Gespräche aus Berlin zum Attentatsort in der "Wolfsschanze" am Tag des 20. Juli. Und er erlebt, wie Eva Braun Partys auf dem Berghof organisiert, wenn Hitler nicht anwesend ist. Am Schluss wird Rochus Misch mit den letzten "Getreuen" einziehen in den sogenannten "Führerbunker". Als der Untergang naht, bleibt der "Bunkertelefonist" pflichtbewusst an seinem Platz in der Telefonzentrale. Selbst dann noch, als Hitler und Eva Braun sich umgebracht haben. Für Misch, der Hitler nur als Privatmann erlebte - eine gespenstische Variante der "Banalität des Bösen" -, galt das Gebot unbedingter Loyalität.Um deren fatale Seite geht es ihm, wenn er heute sein Leben erzählt: "Nein, ich werfe dem Rochus Misch von damals nicht vor, dass er keinen Ärger macht. Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.

I was pleasantly surprised. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Will be looking for more from this author.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. A solid 4 stars from me.
