Overview: Estas Obras selectas pueden ser vistas como un aporte a la construcción de una consciencia crítica de problemas políticos y culturales, lo cual no es muy frecuente en el ámbito académico y menos aún en la opinión pública latinoamericana. El autor se ha situado en la tradición crítica de las ciencias sociales, poniendo en duda, por ejemplo, las bondades de la modernización acelerada, pero cuestionando igualmente las tradiciones culturales que tienen notables raíces históricas en América Latina y el Tercer Mundo. Algunos ensayos de esta selección se consagran a rescatar lo valioso del orden premoderno, como la religión (en cuanto fuente de sentido), la estética fundamentada en lo bello y las normativas meritocráticas. Al mismo tiempo nuestro autor ha cuestionado el arcaísmo mantenido artificialmente en la región andina, el cual es enaltecido por las teorías contemporáneas que favorecen una identidad indígena no contaminada por la modernidad. Estas teorías, según Mansilla, promueven una cultura política autoritaria que tiene aún fuertes raíces en muchos países latinoamericanos. La religiosidad popular y los ideales igualitaristas y utópicos han jugado un rol nefasto al predisponer a la población a la aceptación de gobiernos y caudillos que piensan y deciden en nombre de los pueblos. Varios ensayos de esta selección analizan los regímenes populistas que se consagran a la construcción de élites muy privilegiadas que monopolizan las decisiones políticas. El autoritarismo y otros infortunios de la esfera política, nos dice el autor, tienen la virtud de cautivar a muchos intelectuales, escritores y artistas, los que, a su vez, se dedican a justificar los fastos de estos regímenes. Una parte importante de la población respectiva se siente atraída por diversos mecanismos de encandilamiento masivo que irradian estos experimentos sociales. Mansilla como un homenaje en vida al autor y como un reconocimiento a su largo trabajo intelectual de más de cincuenta años. Really enjoyed this one. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

It was okay. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.
