In De vele gezichten van Sicilië beschrijft Fik Meijer aan de hand van politieke, religieuze, culturele, sociale en economische ontwikkelingen hoe de culturen van verscheidene volken samensmolten en hoe brute machtspolitiek Sicilië in een neerwaartse spiraal bracht. Een bont gezelschap trekt voorbij: koningen, krijgsheren, generaals, hertogen, graven, pausen, bisschoppen, priesters, landbaronnen, kooplieden, boeren, pachters, arbeiders en slaven. Gezamenlijk schreven zij de geschiedenis van Sicilië. Sommige heersers waren heel opvallend aanwezig. In de Oudheid deden vooral de tirannen Gelon en Dionysius I van zich spreken, in de elfde en twaalfde eeuw leverden de Normandiërs Rogier I en zijn zoon Rogier II het bewijs dat uiteenlopende bevolkingsgroepen goed naast elkaar kunnen leven, en in de dertiende eeuw deed de Hohenstaufen-koning Frederik II de wereld versteld staan. Talrijke monumenten herinneren aan de gloriedagen van weleer. De opstand van de Siciliaanse Vespers in 1282 was een keerpunt. Slecht bestuur in de volgende eeuwen leidde tot opstanden van boeren en arbeiders. De uitbarsting van de Etna, aardbevingen en besmettelijke ziekten zorgden voor een verdere ontwrichting van de maatschappij. De criminaliteit nam toe. Kleine bendes op het platteland konden zodoende uitgroeien tot grote maffiaorganisaties in de steden. In De vele gezichten van Sicilië vertelt Fik Meijer met zijn aanstekelijke pen het complete verhaal van dit fascinerende eiland. Fik Meijer (1942) studeerde klassieke talen en oude geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Leiden. Na twaalf jaar als leraar werkzaam te zijn geweest in het voortgezet onderwijs en het hbo maakte hij in 1980 de overstap naar de Universiteit van Amsterdam. In 1992 werd hij bijzonder hoogleraar zeegeschiedenis van de klassieke oudheid en in 1999 hoogleraar oude geschiedenis. Sinds 2007 is hij met emeritaat.Aanvankelijk publiceerde Fik Meijer vooral over de late Romeinse republiek, later ook over de zeegeschiedenis van de Grieken en de Romeinen. Ook vertaalde hij teksten van Griekse en Latijnse auteurs, waaronder Gregorius van Tours, Flavius Josephus (samen met Marinus Wes) en Paulus Diaconus (samen met Ted Meijer). De laatste vijftien jaar heeft hij zich met veel succes toegelegd op het schrijven van boeken voor een breed publiek, waaronder Gladiatoren, Paulus en Twee steden. Hij ontving in 2005 de Oikos publieksprijs, de onderscheiding voor een classicus die op voortreffelijke wijze de oudheid onder de aandacht van een groot publiek heeft gebracht. Such a great read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.
