Overview: "Welke plaag doorkruiste ooit met dezelfde snelheid Europa, Azië en Afrika? Welke ziekte boorde zich dieper in de aderen en ingewanden? Welke foltering is wreder?' Dit schreef de humanist Desiderius Erasmus in 1525 in een brief aan medehumanist Krzysztof Szydlowiecki. Het onderwerp van de brief was syfilis, een ziekte die inmiddels dertig jaar Europa teisterde. Erasmus zette op de lijst van gruwelijke aandoeningen die de mens konden treffen syfilis bovenaan, nog boven pest en tering. Het was de ziekte waarmee het pas ontdekte Amerika de uitroeiing van zijn bevolking door pokken, mazelen, pest en nog meer Europese aandoeningen op een afdoende wijze leek terug te betalen.Hoewel na verloop van tijd de ziekte milder werd, bleef syfilis als een loden deken over Europa hangen. Toen ontdekt werd dat syfilis decennia na de besmetting alsnog iemand kon doden werd de angst ervoor alleen maar groter. En wie zo'n gruwelijke ziekte opliep moest toch wel het een en ander op zijn of haar kerfstok hebben wilde God tot dit soort maatregelen overgaan. Maatschappelijk werd de syfilispatiënt steeds meer een paria. Niet alleen vanwege het tarten van Hogere Machten, maar in toenemende mate ook vanwege de verdenking van overtreding van maatschappelijke regels, meestal samengevat in de term "ontucht'.Het "fatsoen' begon in de negentiende eeuw te regeren, vooral op seksueel gebied. En met het fatsoen deed de dubbele moraal haar intrede: wat vrouwen niet was toegestaan werd voor de man vergoelijkt. En omdat veel vrouwen zich niet wensten of konden conformeren aan deze dubbele moraal werd de oorzaak van de verspreiding van syfilis in hun schoenen geschoven, te beginnen bij de prostituee. De strijd tegen syfilis is nauw verbonden met de onderdrukking van de vrouw.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.

Good, but not quite perfect. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

Finished it in a couple of days. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. A solid 5/5 for me.
