Overview: La Historia verdadera de la conquista de la Nueva Espa�a es una obra de Bernal D�az del Castillo, que fue uno de los soldados participantes en la mayor�a de las jornadas de la conquista de M�xico en el siglo XVI.Los bi�grafos de D�az del Castillo coinciden en que 1568 fue la fecha de la conclusi�n del manuscrito. Una copia manuscrita lleg� a Espa�a en 1575 (en el siglo XVI era habitual la circulaci�n manuscrita de las obras), la cual sirvi� de base a la primera edici�n impresa, que fue publicada p�stuma en 1632;1 2 de ella existen dos ediciones diferentes en la que consta el a�o 1632 en portada, pero s�lo una fue impresa "verdaderamente" en ese a�o, aunque con dos variantes de estado (que no de edici�n); la segunda es una falsificaci�n o edici�n contrahecha que imita la primera variante de estado y fue hecha a finales del siglo XVII o principios del XVIII, aunque muchos siguen consider�ndola primera edici�n.La aut�ntica primera lleva una portada calcogr�fica de Juan de Courbes y sus dos variantes o estados, seg�n fundamenta el estudio tipobibliogr�fico exhaustivo de Carlos Fern�ndez Gonz�lez,3 se distinguen en que una cuenta con un cap�tulo final que no tiene la otra y corrige dos erratas tipogr�ficas (en la signatura Ii3 y en el a�o de apostilla marginal en el f. 251v), adem�s de otros rasgos diversos.2 Es una obra de estilo cautivador desde las primeras l�neas. Nos narra el proceso de la conquista de M�xico de una manera ruda, aunque sencilla, �gil y directa. Cada p�gina es un retrato pintoresco plagado de detalles. Leer su libro es transportarse al pasado y vivir al lado de un soldado todos los sucesos de la conquista: descripciones de lugares, relatos de personajes, an�cdotas, cr�ticas agudas y angustiantes relaciones de fatiga y peligros enfrentados.Cada uno de los doscientos catorce cap�tulos se convierten en una vivencia para el lector. Como muestra de la sencillez de su estilo, Bernal narra un asombroso fragmento de cuando los espa�oles entraron por primera vez a la ciudad de M�xico: luego otro d�a partimos de Estapalapa, muy acompa�ados de (...) grandes caciques, �bamos por nuestra calzada adelante, la cual est� ancha de ocho pasos, y va tan derecha a la ciudad de M�xico, que me parece que no se torc�a poco ni mucho, y puesto que es bien ancha toda iba llena de aquellas gentes que no cab�a, unos que entraban en M�xico y otros que sal�an, y los indios que nos ven�an a ver, (...) estaban llenas las torres y los cu�s [templos] y en las canoas y de todas partes de la laguna, y no era cosa de maravillar, porque jam�s hab�an visto caballos ni hombres como nosotros.Si estamos interesados en saber lo que com�a Moctezuma, podemos recurrir a la Historia Verdadera: en el comer, le ten�an sus cocineros sobre treinta maneras de guisados, hechos a su manera y usanza y teni�nlos puestos en braseros de barro chicos debajo, porque se enfriasen, y de aquello que Moctezuma hab�a de comer guisaban m�s de trescientos platos (...) cotidianamente le guisaban gallinas, gallos de papada, faisanes, perdices de tierra, codornices, patos mansos y bravos (...) �l sentado en un asentadero bajo, rico y blando, y la mesa tambi�n baja (...) all� le pon�an sus manteles de mantas blancas (...) y cuatro mujeres muy hermosas y limpias le daban agua en unos xicales (...) y le daban sus toallas, y otras dos mujeres le traen el pan de tortillas.Gracias a su obra, tambi�n podemos acompa�ar a los espa�oles en sus penurias: ... cada d�a menguaban nuestras fuerzas y la de los mexicanos crec�an, y ve�amos muchos de los nuestros muertos y todos los dem�s heridos, y aunque pele�bamos muy como varones no pod�amos hacer retirar ni que se apartasen los muchos escuadrones que de d�a y de noche nos daban guerra, y la p�lvora apocada, y la comida y el agua por consiguiente, (...) en fin, ve�amos la muerte a los ojos, (...)
