Overview: Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog wordt vlak achter de Belgische frontlinie een soldaat gevonden. Hij is niet gewond, maar weet niet wie hij is. Men brengt hem naar een gesticht voor krankzinnigen. Vier jaar na de oorlog vindt hij via een advertentie zijn familie terug. Hij blijkt Amand Coppens te heten en hij heeft een vrouw, Julienne, en twee kinderen. Julienne neemt hem mee naar huis, maar hij herinnert zich zijn leven met haar niet. Het is een vreemde, ongemakkelijke situatie, ook voor haar. Ze vertelt hem over hun verleden en hij probeert de man te worden die hij ooit was, en zo worden ze opnieuw verliefd, veel verliefder dan ze ooit waren toen ze jaren geleden met elkaar trouwden.Naarmate hij zich meer op zijn gemak voelt in zijn nieuwe leven krijgt hij vaker nachtmerries over zijn tijd in de loopgraven.Het ergste vindt hij nog wel dat hij, afgaand op zijn nachtmerries, van de door hem begane gruwelijkheden heeft genoten. Dat kan hij zichzelf niet vergeven.De herinnerde soldaat is een roman over het begrip ‘identiteit’. Amand heeft geen echte identiteit omdat hij geen herinneringen van voor 1918 heeft. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Will be looking for more from this author.

Not bad, but not my favorite. The pacing was a bit slow and I found myself skimming a few pages. It wasn't terrible, just okay. Just right down the middle.

I was pleasantly surprised. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
