Overview: Peradaban keilmuan Arab-Islam sesungguhnya tidak lahir murni dan orisinil dari bangsa Arab sendiri. Ada beberapa sentrum dari peradaban tetangga yang berkontribusi membangunnya: Hellenis, Persia, Hindi, dan lain-lain. Di antara contohnya, yang dibahas dalam buku ini, adalah peradaban keilmuan bahasa dan linguistik Arab. Kendati pertama kali muncul karena motivasi menjaga bahasa al-Quran, pematangan kajian linguistik Arab justru dilakukan oleh orang-orang non-Arab yang kebanyakan adalah para mantan budak (mawali) berkebangsaan Persia. Para peletak dasar linguistik Arab klasik, seperti Sibawaih dari Mazhab Basrah dan Kisai dari Mazhab Kufah, adalah orang-orang keturunan Persia. Kajian linguistik Arab klasik juga disemarakkan oleh para linguis dari mazhab keagamaan non-mainstream, seperti al-Farra, as-Sirafi, dan Ibnu Jinni dari Mu’tazilah serta Ibnu Ma?a al-Qur?ubi dari Mazhab Zahiriy. Karya-karya filsafat dari Yunani bahkan diterjemahkan oleh ‘Abdullah ibn al-Muqaffa, seorang linguis yang dianggap zindiq. Linguistik Arab klasik juga turut mengambil pola logika ala Yunani untuk memperkuat metodologinya. Teori-teori yang dikenal dalam ilmu nahwu (sintaksis) seperti istiqra, qiyas, ta’lil, dan ‘amil misalnya, adalah pengembangan pola logika ala Yunani seperti induksi, deduksi, rasionalisasi dan lain-lain.Menguraikan lebih lanjut mengenai hal-hal itu, buku ini menjelaskan tentang sejarah bahasa Arab dan metodologi linguistiknya. Buku ini terdiri dari empat bagian: (1) tentang fiqh al-lughah (kajian filologis atau asal usul bahasa); (2) sejarah bahasa Arab dari masa Jahiliyah hingga masa Abbasiyah; (3) mazhab-mazhab nahwu; dan (4) metodologi linguistik Arab klasik dan modern.Kehadiran buku ini diharapkan dapat mengisi khazanah literatur berbahasa Indonesia yang masih langka dengan buku-buku tentang sejarah dan mazhab linguistik Arab. Buku ini ditulis dengan maksud utama untuk menjadi semacam buku pengantar bagi para pengkaji linguistik Arab sehingga cocok untuk pembelajar linguistik Arab dalam level menengah.Tidak banyak hal yang benar-benar baru dalam buku ini. Sebagian besar dari apa yang saya lakukan adalah menukil, merangkum, menerjemahkan, serta sesekali memberikan analisis dan pendapat penulis pribadi dari hasil pembacaan terhadap literatur-literatur linguistik Arab yang mayoritas berbahasa Arab.Ada dua pakar bahasa dan sastra Arab yang berulangkali dijadikan rujukan oleh penulis, yakni Ali Abdul Waid Wafi dan Shauqiaif. Pada bagian akhir buku, isi pembahasan lebih banyak berupa resum dari buku-buku yang penulis baca. Semua itu tidak lepas dari tujuan utama penulisan buku ini, yakni mengantarkan para pelajar pemula linguistik Arab agar bisa mendapatkan pengetahuan dasar tentang linguistik Arab dalam bahasa Indonesia.Karena sifatnya pengantar, pembahasan di dalam buku ini cukup ringkas. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. Worth the time and money.
