Overview: Athens in the time of Pericles is usually regarded as the perfect model of direct democracy. With its popular assembly, its law courts, its magistrates popularly elected or chosen by lot, it might seem, beyond any dispute, the most democratic of states. Yet to a contemporary observer, Thucydides, it was a "democracy in name but the rule of the first citizen in fact." Modern scholars have taken up the debate and added an element to it by arguing that a society that included slaves and despised labor can hardly be called "democratic." A very satisfying read. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
