Overview: Her toplum, her kültür, tarih boyunca kendisinin diğer toplum ve kültürlerden üstün olduğunu savunagelmiştir. On dokuzuncu yüzyıldan itibaren teknik, ekonomik alanlarda, Doğu’ya oranla çok önde olan Batı da, kendi kültürünün, yaşamakta olduğu ‘modernite’nin, en üstün olduğu tezini öne sürmüştür. Batı’ya göre her toplum, kendi tarihi ile geleneklerinden bağımsız olarak, sosyo-ekonomik gelişmeyle birlikte modern toplum düzeyine ulaşabilir. Dolayısıyla modernleşme kuramı, üstün kültürün, ancak Batı anlayışıyla gerçekleşeceği iddiasını taşımaktadır.Modernleşme, kapitalist üretim kültürüyle birlikte ortaya çıkan bir süreçtir. Sanayinin gelişmeye başlamasıyla birlikte, işgücü giderek önemini yitirmiş; makineler, emeğin yerine geçmiştir. Böylelikle sermaye, işgücünü geriye atarak giderek kâr oranlarını yukarılara taşımıştır. Gelirlerin artması ve yeni teknolojiler, Batı dünyasına, yeni yaşam standartlarını, yeni bir yaşama biçimini de getirmiştir.Batı-dışı modernleşme kavramı ise, bir melezliğe işaret etmektedir. Buna göre, Batı’nın haricinde bulunan toplumların yaşadığı modernleşme süreçleri hem ekonomik, hem de kültürel bakımdan Batı’da yaşanandan farklı gerçekleşecektir. Bu çalışmada, Türk modernleşmesinin Batı-dışı modernleşme projelerine bir örnek olarak irdelenebileceği tezi savunulmaktadır. Cumhuriyet’i kuran aydınlar tabakası, geleneğin ve özellikle dinî oluşumların karşısında çeşitli yasaklamalar getirerek ve bazı kanunlar çıkararak yeni rejimi oluşturmuşlardır. Bu yaklaşım, daha sonra ele alınacağı şekilde “modernite” kavramının temel yaklaşımlarından biridir. Modernleşme sürecinin bir aşaması olan bu olgu, geleneğin görünür halde olmasını engellemiş fakat yaşamasını ortadan kaldıramamıştır. Böylelikle ortaya çıkan yeni Türk toplumu, tam anlamıyla Batılaşamamış, melez bir toplum haline gelmiş; böylelikle Batı-dışı modernleşme süreçlerine örnek oluşturmuştur.Cumhuriyet’ten sonraki bazı aydın ve sanatçılar, modernleşme yönündeki çalışmaların bu şekilde uygulanmasına karşı çıkmıştır. Söz konusu karşı duruş, modernitenin kendisine yönelik değildir. Modernleşmenin şekline karşı duranlara göre rejimin yürütücüleri, modernleşmeyi halkın isteği doğrultusunda değil, olması gerektiğini düşündükleri biçimde gerçekleştirmeye çalışmışlardır. Aslında moderniteye karşı olmayan ama Türkiye’deki oluşumu da benimsemeyen bu kuşağın içinde, yönetmen Halit Refiğ ve yazar Kemal Tahir de yer almaktadır.

It was okay. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.
