Overview: “Bir gece çamaşırlarımızı dahi alamadan bu memleketten nasıl kovulduğumuzu düşündükçe fena olurum. İnsan hizmetçisini bile kovarken eşyalarını almasına müsaade eder. 600 senelik bir ailenin bu memlekette hiç mi hakkı yoktu? Osmanlı hânedanına mensup kızlar ve kadınlar, atıldıkları Avrupa memleketlerinin kendilerine yabancı olan şehirlerinde açlıktan kıvrandılar, süründüler; fakat namuslarından asla fedakârlık etmediler.” Şehzâde Selim Efendi’nin kızı Emine Nemîka Sultan 3 Mart 1924 itibarıyla Türk-İslâm tarihinde yeni bir sayfa açıldı. Müslümanların en eski müessesesi olan halifelik kaldırıldı; ayrıca tarihin en uzun ömürlü hânedanlarından Osmanlı ailesinin takriben 200 ferdi, vatandaşlıktan çıkarılarak vatan toprakları dışına sürüldü. Bu, yaşlısından beşikteki bebeğe kadar hepsi için sıkıntılı bir hayatın başlangıcı oldu. Hemen hepsi sürgünde vatansız, pasaportsuz olarak yaşadı. Bankalarda paraları, yanlarında nakitleri ve yurt dışında akrabaları olmayan bu insanları çoğu tarifsiz acılar çekti. İlaç parası bulamadığı için dilenenler; konu komşunun getirdiği bir tas çorba ile yaşayanlar; açlıktan ölenler; sefalet sebebiyle intihar edenler; aklını kaçıranlar; kimsesizler mezarlığına gömülenler oldu. Ama her zaman asalet ve şereflerine uygun yaşamaya çalıştılar. Tarihin en eski hânedanlarından Osmanlı ailesi, siyaset sahnesinden böylece çekilmiş oldu. 1952 yılında hânedanın hanımlarına, 1974 yılında da erkeklerine memlekete dönme izni verildi.
