Overview: Band 1 des sechsteiligen Ausstellungskatalogs zur AusstellungComics! Mangas! Graphic Novels!, Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Bonn, 7. Mai bis 10. September 2017.Mit rund 300 Exponaten aus Amerika, Europa und Japan ist Comics! Mangas! Graphic Novels! die bisher umfangreichste Ausstellung zur Geschichte dieser Gattung in Deutschland. Trotz der Bildergeschichten von Künstlern wie Rodolphe Toepffer, Gustave Doré oder Wilhelm Busch, die auf Sprechblasen noch verzichteten, entwickelte sich der Comic als erstes Bild-Massenmedium zum Ausklang des 19. Jahrhunderts in New York und speiste sich zunächst aus den unterschiedlichen Kulturen der Einwanderer. Gesonderte Bereiche der Ausstellung sind Europa und Japan gewidmet, wo sich der Comic durch den Zweiten Weltkrieg erst spät verbreitete und ganz eigene Traditionen ausprägte. Während die Zeichner in Europa die Bildsprache des Comics verdichten, fächert der Manga sich durch multiperspektivisches, filmisches Erzählen auf und ist damit in den letzten Jahren zu einer neuen weltweiten Jugendkultur avanciert.Mit dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erreichten die großen Tageszeitungen der USA mit ihren Comic-Serien Millionen von Lesern – und zwar Tag für Tag und sonntags in Farbe. Adressat war in erster Linie der erwachsene Zeitungsleser und erst dann Kinder und Jugendliche. Serien wie Winsor McCays Little Nemo in Slumberland oder Krazy Kat von George Herriman verblüffen bis heute durch ihre virtuose Zeichenkunst und zeugen von der kulturellen Bedeutung des Mediums. Mit dem Aufkommen der „comic books“, d.h. der Comic-Hefte, und der Superhelden in der zweiten Hälfte der 1930er-Jahre wurde der Comic zur ersten medialen Jugendkultur, lange vor Bill Haley und dem Rock ’n’ Roll.
