Overview: «La realtà è che gli orari dei pasti sono una costruzione culturale e cambiano non solo da un paese all’altro, ma da una classe sociale all’altra e anche da un’epoca all’altra.»Tra la fine del Settecento e i primi anni dell’Ottocento l’aristocrazia a Londra e a Parigi modificò gli orari dei pasti quotidiani. Il pranzo, considerato all’epoca il pasto principale del giorno, venne consumato sempre più tardi, fino alle cinque, alle sei, alle sette del pomeriggio, mentre veniva introdotta una robusta colazione, il déjeuner à la fourchette, a metà mattinata, e scompariva la cena serale. La nuova moda venne adottata nel corso dell’Ottocento dalle classi medie e si diffuse lentamente anche in paesi come la Germania, l’Italia, la Russia, gli Stati Uniti, ma nel frattempo l’aristocrazia inglese e francese spostava l’orario del pranzo sempre più tardi, fino alla sera; col risultato che il divario delle abitudini non si ridusse realmente fino all’egualitario secolo Ventesimo. I contemporanei notarono con interesse questo cambiamento e ne discussero i motivi; la spiegazione più probabile è che le classi dirigenti, in quelle che erano a tutti gli effetti le due massime potenze mondiali, trovarono un nuovo modo per sottolineare la distanza rispetto alla borghesia e il divario fra capitale e provincia, nonché fra paesi moderni e paesi culturalmente arretrati. Il fenomeno, finora mai studiato, è interessante per lo storico come per il linguista, giacché provocò dei mutamenti nella designazione dei pasti che sono ancora oggi oggetto di discussione fra i parlanti; ed è significativo anche per la critica letteraria, dal momento che certi dettagli delle abitudini sociali nel romanzo dell’Ottocento sono incomprensibili se non in questa luce.

I was pleasantly surprised. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Enjoyable weekend read.

Really enjoyed this one. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.
