Overview: Chatterton invented his fifteenth-century monk, Thomas Rowley, when he was 15, after his imagination was fired by finding some authentic scraps of manuscript (as depicted by the engraved half-title). He wrote the poems in an authentic medieval style, convincing a large proportion of his readers of their authenticity. Although later uncovered as a literary imposter, he was later taken more seriously as an artist in his own right, particularly by the Romantics, who venerated him as a misunderstood tragic genius: becoming Wordsworth's "marvellous boy" and Keats's "child of sorrow." For Oscar Wilde he was a "pure artist." Chatterton, who committed suicide at the age of 17 - became a veritable symbol to the Romantics of a tragic genius misunderstood by his contemporaries , a victim whose story "Told the keen Insult of th'unfeeling Heart, The dread Dependence on the low-bred mind, Told every pang, at which thy Soul might smart, Neglect, and grinning Scorn, and Want combin'd!" - Coleridge, Monody on the Death of Chatterton.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.

An average read for me. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

Good, but not quite perfect. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Not bad at all.

Pretty good overall. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Not bad at all.
