Overview: Tutto questo mondo sensibile è come un libro scritto dalle mani di Dio, cioè creato dalla potenza divina, e le singole creature sono come figure, non inventate dall'arbitrio dell'uomo, ma istituite dalla volontà di Dio per manifestare ed indicare la sua invisibile sapienza": così scriveva all'inizio del XII secolo Ugo di San Vittore, sintetizzando la concezione medioevale e cristiana del mondo sensibile come simbolo di realtà spirituali, come alfabeto spirituale. Gli animali fra queste lettere o figure che spetta agli uomini di decifrare: anzi sono forse le più cariche di senso e le più misteriose, quelle che - come afferma lo pseudo Dionigi Areopagita - ci iniziano alle più alte rivelazioni divine. Non sorprende perciò la straordinaria diffusione delle raffigurazioni animali in tutte le espressioni artistiche del medioevo: scultura, pittura, letteratura... A questa sacra zoologia era anche dedicato un genere specifico: quello dei "bestiari", in cui i racconti naturalistici, spesso di carattere fantastico, erano seguiti da interpretazioni allegoriche. Nei bestiari, gli animali sfilano davanti a noi in un simbolico corteo svelandoci il loro significato segreto: come quando - in illo tempore - si presentarono ad Adamo in paradiso per ricevere il loro nome. Il saggio di Francesco Zambon è diviso in due parti. La prima illustra i presupposti teorici del bestiario, ricostruendone la "teologia" attraverso le dottrine ermeneutiche dei pensatori cristiani, da Origene ad Agostino a Scoto Eriugena. Nella seconda parte, esso ci trasporta in un viaggio affascinante attraverso alcuni dei più significativi emblemi animali della tarda antichità e del Medioevo, indagandone i significati e le trasformazioni. Incontriamo così la vipera parricida e matricida, il Libro dei mostri, la colomba argentata, i "bestiari divini" di Sant'Antonio e di Cecco d'Ascoli, fino a giungere alla zoologia erotica del Bestiario d'amore di Richard de Fournival e di Giacomo da Lentini e al grande mito di Laura-fenice sviluppato da Petrarca nel Canzoniere.

Finished it in a couple of days. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Will be looking for more from this author.

Really enjoyed this one. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. A solid 4 stars from me.
