Overview: Una qualunque domenica di febbraio del 2002 Elena Lappin sta cenando nel suo appartamento londinese con il marito e i tre figli. Ha da poco pubblicato il primo romanzo e tutte le lingue e i luoghi che si agitano dentro di lei sembrano finalmente aver trovato casa. Ma «la vita scrive storie che i romanzieri spesso cercano di imitare» e quella calma apparente è stravolta dalla piú inaspettata delle telefonate. La voce di un uomo dal forte accento russo le rivela che quel che credeva di sapere delle sue origini è falso. Ed Elena, nata a Mosca, cresciuta a Praga e Amburgo, vissuta fra Israele, Canada, Stati Uniti e Londra, deve ripercorrere ogni tappa delle sue migrazioni, sfogliare ogni strato della sua ricca identità linguistica, per ritrovarsi. Nata a Mosca nel 1954 (un anno dopo la morte di Stalin); cresciuta a Praga (intorno allo spartiacque del 1968) e poi ad Amburgo (dove matura la prima consapevolezza di essere ebrea); compiuti gli studi a Tel Aviv (negli anni a cavallo fra la Guerra del Kippur e quella del Libano); divenuta madre per la prima volta a Ottawa, la seconda ad Haifa e nello stato di New York la terza; approdata come scrittrice ed editor a Londra, Elena Lappin è un perfetto esempio di espatriata in perenne movimento geografico e umano. Questo suo memoir è dunque storia privata e famigliare (e le famiglie nel suo caso sono plurali), ma in un certo senso anche dell'Europa nella seconda metà del Ventesimo secolo. Linguistica è la domanda che Lappin si pone nel titolo, e che altre ne sottintende: in che lingua parlo, penso, amo? In che lingua vivo? Infine, in che lingua scrivo? E linguistici sono gli strumenti con cui prova a darsi risposta. Svariati idiomi scandiscono la sua infanzia, l'adolescenza, lo studio, gli affetti, gli amori, il lavoro, lo sguardo. Si affiancano l'uno all'altro, sommandosi fino a diventare il suo patrimonio genetico, il luogo stesso della sua esistenza. Il russo dell'infanzia, dolce come una ciotola di ciliegie: «Mio nonno mi fece il dono di preservare la mia prima lingua, il russo, che sembrava destinata ad essere la mia lingua madre. Ma non lo fu». Il ceco, appreso con facilità, come sempre i bambini, quando la madre la porta con sé a Praga dove Elena, quattrenne, si impadronisce perfino di quella peculiare vena ironica e arguta che sostanzia la letteratura ceca. Il tedesco dell'adolescenza ad Amburgo, la città dove la famiglia decide di emigrare quando è ormai chiaro che la Primavera di Praga è finita: i carri armati sovietici si sono ritirati, ma hanno cancellato «un numero magico, un anno magico, un luogo magico» e trasformato in lingua del nemico il russo fiabesco dei nonni. L'ebraico scoperto a tredici anni, in una Germania in cui ancora serpeggia l'antisemitismo, e fatto proprio in Israele. Infine l'inglese, scelto apparentemente per ragioni di studio e di ricerca, e che invece si rivelerà parte integrante del suo patrimonio genetico. È «la voce in inglese di un uomo dal forte accento russo» quella che irrompe nella sua vita una sera qualsiasi del 2002, e che la condurrà cosí indietro nel tempo, e in orizzonti spaziali cosí imprevisti, che Lappin, per conciliarsi con una storia che sembra sottrarla a se stessa, non può che ripercorrerla passo passo, raccontando il farsi e il disfarsi di una molteplicità di esistenze sulle due sponde dell'Atlantico.
