Il esquisse une aventure de Gauvain, l'un des chevaliers de la Table Ronde du roi Arthur. Il ne subsiste qu'un seul manuscrit du poeme, le Cotton Nero A.x., conserve a la British Library; il inclut egalement trois autres poemes, dont le celebre Pearl. Ces quatre poemes narratifs, ecrits dans un dialecte du moyen anglais du nord des Midlands de l'Ouest, sont probablement l' uvre d'un unique auteur, reste anonyme, et appele dans les etudes le - -. Dans ce recit, Gauvain accepte un defi lance par un mysterieux guerrier entierement vert. Ce - Chevalier vert - permet a tous de le frapper avec sa hache, mais en echange, celui qui l'aura frappe doit accepter de subir le meme coup un an et un jour plus tard. Gauvain accepte et le decapite d'un seul coup, mais le Chevalier se releve, prend sa tete et rappelle a Gauvain sa promesse. A very satisfying read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.
