Overview: Vivir, pensar y mirar son los tres ejes de este libro y los tres bloques en que se agrupan los ensayos que reúne. Son también tres ejes fundamentales en la obra –tanto de ficción como ensayística– de Siri Hustvedt, tres núcleos temáticos sobre los que ha reflexionado y escrito casi obsesivamente: la propia experiencia vital y las raíces familiares, los enigmáticos mecanismos del cerebro y los impactos visuales de las artes plásticas. El hilo conductor que conecta todos los textos aquí recopilados –escritos entre 2006 y 2011–es, según la propia autora, «la pertinaz curiosidad por saber qué significa ser humanos». En el primer bloque, «Vivir», indaga en la memoria, la emoción y la imaginación, reflexiona sobre el origen escandinavo de su familia, las figuras de sus padres y su personal vivencia de la migraña, entre otros temas. En el segundo bloque, «Pensar», aborda temas relacionados con la filosofía, la neurociencia, el psicoanálisis, la lectura y la escritura, es decir los territorios del cerebro.
