Overview: Written in traditional verse form, the work by Friedrich Reinhold Kreutzwald drew on folklore and the Finnish epic Kalevala, and helped catalyze the budding national renaissance in the late 19th century.The translation by Triinu Kartus, an expat Estonian poet who resides in Tasmania, is the second English translation of the epic. It includes parallel Estonian text and over 80 illustrations by another Australian Estonian, Gunnar Neeme, which are of separate note.It includes three afterwords written by President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, Tartu world literature professor Jüri Talvet and comparative folkloristics professor Ülo Valk.Kalevipoja“ esmatrüki 150. aastapäevaks on Eesti Kirjandusmuuseum koos kirjastusega Kunst välja andnud eepose ingliskeelse uustõlke „Kalevipoeg: the Estonian national Epic, Eesti rahvuseepos“. Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Would probably read it again at some point.

Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.
