Overview: Cette autobiographie imaginaire part d'une histoire vraie. En 1518, un ambassadeur maghrébin, revenant d'un pélerinage à la Mecque, est capturé par des pirates siciliens, qui l'offrent en cadeau à Léon X, le grand pape de la Renaissance. Ce voyageur s'appelait Hassan al- Wazzan. Il devient le géographe Jean-Léon de Médicis, dit Léon l'Africain. Ainsi, après avoir vécu à Grenade, sa ville natale, à Fès, à Tombouctou, au Caire, à Constantinople, Léon passe plusieurs années à Rome, où il enseigne l'arabe, écrit la partie hébraïque d'un dictionnaire polyglotte, et rédige, en italien, sa célèbre "Description de l'Afrique", qui va rester pendant quatre siècles une référence essentielle pour la connaissance du continent noir. Mais plus fascinante encore que l'oeuvre de Léon, c'est la vie, son aventure personnelle que ponctuent les grands événements de son temps : il se trouvait à Grenade pendant la Reconquista, d'où, avec sa famille, il a dû fuir l'Inquisition; il se trouvait en Egypte lors de sa prise par les Ottomans; il se trouvait en Afrique noire à l'apogée de l'empire de l'Askia Mohamed Touré; il se trouvait enfin à Rome aux plus belles heures de la Renaissance, ainsi qu'au moment du sac de la ville par les soldats de Charles Quint. Homme d'Orient et d'Occident, homme d'Afrique et d'Europe, Léon l'Africain est, d'une certaine manière, l'ancêtre de l'humanité cosmo- polite d'aujourd'hui. Son aventure méritait d'être reconstituée, d'une année à l'autre, d'une ville à l'autre, d'un destin à l'autre.On pouvait difficilement trouver dans l'Histoire un personnage dont la vie corresponde davantage à ce siècle étonnant que fut le XVIe siècle. Really enjoyed this one. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Would probably read it again at some point.

A very satisfying read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. A solid 5/5 for me.
