Overview: Aus dem Praktischer Idealismus ist Heroismus; praktischer Materialismus ist Eudämonismus. Wer nicht an Ideale glaubt, hat keinen Grund, ideal zu handeln; oder für Ideale zu kämpfen und zu leiden. Denn er kennt und anerkennt nur einen einzigen die Lust; nur ein einziges Ü den Schmerz. Heroismus setzt glauben und Bekenntnis zum Ideal Die Überzeugung, dass es höhere Werte gibt als Lust und größere Übel als Schmerz. Dieser Gegensatz zieht sich durch die ganze Menschheitsgeschichte; es ist der Gegensatz von Epikuräern und Stoikern. Dieser Gegensatz ist viel tiefer als der zwischen Theisten und denn es gab Epikuräer, die an Götter glaubten, wie Epikur selbst; und es gab Idealisten, die Atheisten waren wie Buddha. Es handelt sich also hier nicht um den Glauben an Götter – sondern um den Glauben an Werte. Der Materialismus ist voraussetzungsloser – aber phantasieloser und unschöpferischer; der Idealismus ist immer problematisch und verstrickt sich oft in Unsinn und dennoch verdankt ihm die Menschheit ihre größten Werke und Taten. Cäsar, die Vollendung des Grand-seigneur, war der genialste Römer; Goethe, der Gipfel an Genialität, war von allen deutschen Dichtern am meisten Grand-seigneur. Die Priester beugten sich vor der Kraft des Willens, die Könige vor der Kraft des Hirne wiesen die Ziele, Arme bahnten die Wege.3. GENTLEMAN – BOHÉMIEN4. INZUCHT – KREUZUNGMeist ist der Rustikalmensch Inzuchtprodukt, der Urbanmensch Mischling. Eltern und Voreltern des Bauern stammen gewöhnlich aus der gleichen, dünnbevölkerten Gegend; des Adeligen aus derselben dünnen Oberschicht. In beiden Fällen sind die Vorfahren untereinander blutsverwandt und daher meist physisch, psychisch, geistig einander ähnlich. Infolgedessen vererben sie ihre gemeinsamen Züge, Willenstendenzen, Leidenschaften, Vorurteile, Hemmungen in gesteigertem Grade auf ihre Kinder und Nachkommen. Die Wesenszüge, die sich aus dieser Inzucht ergeben, Treue, Pietät, Familiensinn, Kastengeist, Beständigkeit, Starrsinn, Energie, Beschränktheit; Macht der Vorurteile, Mangel an Objektivität, Enge des Horizontes. Hier ist eine Generation nicht Variation der vorhergehenden, sondern einfach deren an die Stelle von Entwicklung tritt Erhaltung. In der Großstadt begegnen sich Völker Rassen, Stände. In der Regel ist der Urbanmensch Mischling aus verschiedensten sozialen und nationalen Elementen. In ihm heben sich die entgegengesetzten Charaktereigenschaften, Vorurteile, Hemmungen, Willenstendenzen und Weltanschauungen seiner Eltern und Voreltern auf oder schwächen einander wenigstens ab. Die Folge ist, daß Mischlinge vielfach Charakterlosigkeit, Hemmungslosigkeit, Willensschwäche, Unbeständigkeit, Pietätlosigkeit und Treulosigkeit mit Objektivität, Vielseitigkeit, geistiger Regsamkeit, Freiheit von Vorurteilen und Weite des Horizontes verbinden. Mischlinge unterscheiden sich stets von ihren Eltern und Voreltern; jede Generation ist eine Variation der vorhergehenden, entweder im Sinne der Evolution oder der Degeneration. Der Inzuchtmensch ist Einseelenmensch – der Mischling Mehrseelenmensch. In jedem Individuum leben seine Ahnen fort als Elemente seiner gleichen sie einander, so ist sie einheitlich, einförmig; streben sie auseinander, so ist der Mensch vielfältig, kompliziert, differenziert. Die Größe eines Geistes liegt in seiner Extensität, das ist in seiner Fähigkeit, alles zu erfassen und zu umfassen; die Größe eines Charakters liegt in seiner Intensität, das ist in seiner Fähigkeit, stark, konzentriert und beständig zu wollen. So sind, in gewissem Sinne, Weisheit und Tatkraft Widersprüche. Je ausgesprochener die Fähigkeit und Neigung eines Menschen, die Dinge als Weiser von allen Seiten zu sehen und sich vorurteilsfrei auf jeden Standpunkt zu stellen – desto schwächer ist meist sein Willensimpuls, nach einer bestimmten Richtung hin unbedenklich zu denn jedem Mot...
