Overview: Es indudablemente difícil saber con qué paisajes olorosos se enfrentaban los antiguos pueblos de Mesoamérica. A los olores generados por el medio ambiente y la actividad humana hace mucho que se los llevó el viento. La arqueología, la iconografía y las fuentes lingüísticas e históricas informan sin embargo sobre algunos de los olores característicos del mundo prehispánico.Esos olores si no eran los únicos, al menos eran los más significativos tanto para las comunidades indígenas –que nos legaron vestigios, descripciones e imágenes de sus antiguas prácticas y creencias– como para los españoles, que fueron testigos olientes del ocaso de la era prehispánica. Estos testimonios permiten acercarnos a los olores del pasado, así como a la sensibilidad mesoamericana y sus nexos con la cosmovisión. De esta manera, podemos dar respuesta a preguntas como: ¿cuáles eran las ideas sobre el olor en los pueblos prehispánicos?, ¿qué categorías daban a sus sensaciones olfativas y qué olores llamaban más su atención?, ¿con qué conceptos los asociaban?Cuando uno pretende imaginar la singularidad de las relaciones que las comunidades indígenas de Mesoamérica mantenían con el olor, es probable que lo primero que venga a la mente sea la imagen de un sacerdote realizando sahumerios de copal en honor a sus dioses. Efectivamente, varias de las civilizaciones que han ocupado esta área cultural a lo largo del tiempo y del espacio, nos han heredado evidencias de que las hierbas, gomas y resinas cuya combustión despide humos aromáticos eran protagonistas centrales de sus rituales. Braseros y sahumadores –algunos de factura sencilla y de uso doméstico, otros de una calidad estética excepcional– han aparecido en contextos arqueológicos, que a veces incluyen restos de las materias orgánicas que se quemaban en esos artefactos.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Worth the time and money.

Such a great read. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
