Overview: 75 jaar na het bombardement op Rotterdam: het waargebeurde verhaal van de dierentuin.De dierentuin ging verhuizen. In de zomer van 1940 zouden de dieren in een feestelijke stoet van de oude plek in het centrum naar de nieuwe aan de rand van de stad trekken.Het liep anders. Op 10 mei vielen de Duitsers Nederland binnen. Er kwamen bommen op de dierentuin terecht en de binnenstad vloog in brand. Dieren stierven of moesten worden afgeschoten wegens ontsnappingsgevaar. Andere liepen los rond in de stad. Zebra's graasden op de Diergaardesingel en in de singel zwommen zeeleeuwen. Van de zorgvuldig geplande verhuizing kwam niets terecht. De dieren moesten zo snel mogelijk worden overgebracht naar de nieuwe dierentuin.Toch waren de oorlogsjaren ook een periode van veerkracht en hoop. In de Blijdorp-polder was een moderne dierentuin gebouwd, aangepast aan de behoeften van de dieren. Door natuurlijke aanwas was de dierencollectie bij de bevrijding twee keer zo groot als na de verhuizing.

Finished it in a couple of days. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Worth the time and money.

I liked it for the most part. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.

Such a great read. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Worth the time and money.
