Overview: Dans le Haut et le Bas-Canada, la première moitié du XIXe siècle est marquée par un nombre croissant de revendications territoriales émanant des Premières Nations en raison des pressions accrues de la société coloniale. C’est cette prise de parole autochtone que cet essai analyse afin de mettre en valeur la participation des Premières Nations à la construction de l’État canadien entre 1815 et 1860. À partir de l’étude des pétitions adressées à la Couronne par les Innus du Saguenay et de la Côte-Nord, ainsi que les Anichinabés de la rive nord des lacs Huron et Supérieur, Mathieu Arsenault trace les contours d’un discours politique autochtone qui s’exprime dans le contexte des relations tendues entre les communautés en marge de l’espace colonial et le centre du pouvoir étatique. . L’analyse de cet activisme politique autochtone permet de comprendre l’évolution de la politique indienne du gouvernement et du rôle du gouverneur durant cette période, et de démontrer pourquoi des approches différentes à l’égard des revendications territoriales autochtones furent mises en place dans les deux sections de la Province du Canada. Elle permet également de souligner l’action politique et la résistance des Autochtones envers l’imposition de la gouvernance coloniale et les lois instaurées par l’État dans les années 1850-1860. . Good, but not quite perfect. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. Enjoyable weekend read.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.

Not bad, but not my favorite. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.
