Overview: La letteratura francese si è imposta nel mondo come «terza letteratura classica», sia per la sua durata (dieci secoli, dalla Chanson de Roland a Sartre), sia perché, se da un lato ha suscitato fondamentali correnti creative e scuole di pensiero, dall'altro ha assimilato e diffuso i modelli letterari provenienti da altri orizzonti: come dice un poeta del Settecento, «nella nostra Francia è il crogiolo in cui l'oro dell'Europa si affina».Già a partire dal Medioevo i vari generi (ad esempio la chanson de geste) si caratterizzano per la loro dimensione europea. Nella cultura francese del Tre-Quattrocento si avvertono istanze umanistiche alla luce dell'insegnamento del Petrarca, per poi assistere alla splendida fioritura della poesia cinquecentesca contrassegnata da grandi scuole poetiche e all'affiorare della geniale inventiva di Rabelais. Questo primo volume ripercorre poi gli originali orientamenti filosofico-religiosi (da Bodin a Montaigne), sullo sfondo dell'intreccio di atteggiamenti ispirati sia alla riscoperta dei classici, specie i più inquietanti (Luciano, Lucrezio, Plutarco), sia alla compresenza di italianismo e anti-italianismo. Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. I'd probably recommend it to a friend.

Pretty good overall. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. Not bad at all.

Not bad, but not my favorite. Some parts were interesting, while others were a bit of a slog to get through. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Would probably read it again at some point.

Such a great read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.
