Overview: C’est l’émouvant portrait d’un ancien tirailleur marocain, arraché à son pays à l’âge de 17 ans, et à qui la France n’a jamais rendu justice, comme à tous ses frères d’armes. Ils sont les oubliés de la nation… C’est à l’occasion d’un reportage photographique, qu’Alain Bujak a rencontré Abdesslem dans un foyer social à Dreux, où il résidait neuf mois de l’année, loin de sa famille, pour pouvoir percevoir une maigre allocation vieillesse. De leurs discussions, il en a tiré un témoignage intime auquel Piero Macola apporte son trait délicat et ses couleurs subtiles, qui magnifient l’émotion de ce récit. 1939, Maroc. Abdesslem s’engage pour quatre ans dans le 4ème Régiment des Tirailleurs Marocains (RTM). Il a plus ou moins 17 ans. Il ne connait pas son âge exact. En octobre 39, le 4ème RTM est mobilisé. C’est une drôle de guerre : « On ne faisait que marcher, creuser des trous, poser du fil barbelé, transporter du matériel, marcher des journées entières. Il n’y avait pas de combats. On attendait ; ça nous rendait nerveux. Le froid, la faim, la fatigue… ». En mai 40, les Allemands pilonnent le RTM. Les jeux sont faits. Ils se replient dans l’idée de rejoindre Marseille en suivant la direction du soleil le jour, les voies ferrées la nuit, afin d’embarquer pour le Maroc. Mais ils sont faits prisonniers par les Allemands et sont parqués dans des conditions déplorables, dans un « frontstalag » en France, un camp réservé aux prisonniers de couleur, tous issus de colonies françaises… Quand en 42, il est enfin de retour au Maroc, il réintègre le 4ème RTM pour crapahuter dans le Moyen-Atlas. Il n’obtient sa première permission que trois ans après être parti de chez lui ! D’enrôlements contraints en réengagements volontaires — pour pouvoir percevoir une retraite militaire —, la guerre devient son métier. Ce n’est qu’en 54, qu’il quitte définitivement l’armée, après avoir encore combattu deux ans en Indochine. Revenu dans son village natal, il retrouve les siens et leur quotidien simple et modeste, rythmé par le travail de la terre et leur vie de berger. Il est à sa place, là, « sur ces montagnes où l’air sent si bon qu’on a envie d’en manger ». Et pourtant, les temps changent, c’est la fin du protectorat de la France sur le Maroc, la réévaluation des retraites militaires est gelée, et partout, l’heure est à la modernité. Peu à peu, Abdesslem est rattrapé par le besoin d’argent : « Comment acheter tout ce que tu peux pas cultiver quand tu n’en as pas les moyens ? ». C’est ainsi qu’en 2004, il s’installe à Dreux pour pouvoir toucher une petite allocation vieillesse, qui aide ses proches à subvenir à leurs besoins. C’est à cette époque qu’Alain Bujak fait sa connaissance. En 2010, Abdesslem renonce à cette pension pour vivre ses vieux jours auprès des siens.
