Overview: Herinneringen en opinies van Hanny Michaelis: over haar jeugd, over Gerard Reve, over schrijvers en kunstenaars, en over haar gedichten.Hanny Michaelis (1922-2007) heeft de Nederlandse literatuur verrijkt met een klein oeuvre aan gedichten. Haar poëzie heeft een grote hoeveelheid lezers aangesproken. De afzonderlijke bundels werden diverse malen herdrukt en de Verzamelde gedichten zijn inmiddels aan de zesde druk toe.Tijdens de onderduik in de Tweede Wereldoorlog hield Hanny Michaelis een dagboek bij. Dit indrukwekkende document werd uitgeven in twee delen: Lenteloos voorjaar. Oorlogsdagboek 1940-1941 (2016) en De wereld waar ik buiten sta. Oorlogsdagboek 1942-1945 (2017).Van 1948 tot 1959 was ze getrouwd met Gerard Kornelis van het Reve. In 2002 verschenen haar jeugdherinneringen onder de titel Verst verleden.Het boek is gebaseerd op vele gesprekken met Hanny Michaelis. Het hoofdstuk ‘Jeugdherinneringen’ is te beschouwen als een aanvulling van Verst verleden. In de hoofdstukken ‘Na de oorlog’ en ‘Leven met Reve’ is er ook veel aandacht voor Gerard (Kornelis van het) Reve die in het leven van Hanny Michaelis een belangrijke rol speelde. Aan de orde komen ook haar werkplekken (o.a. het Amsterdamse stadhuis) en haar relaties, met Meik de Swaan, Louis Lehmann, André Volten en Han Lammers. Uitgebreide aandacht is er voor haar gedichten. In het hoofdstuk ‘Schrijvers, kunstenaars en uitgevers’ spreekt ze o.a. over haar vriendschappelijke relatie met Willem Frederik Hermans, Han Voskuil en Frida Vogels.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

I was pleasantly surprised. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. A solid 5/5 for me.

Pretty good overall. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Enjoyable weekend read.
