Overview: "Ik durf niet te liegen tegen gewone mensen met geleerden als rechters erbij!" Als geen ander uit de oudheid wist Augustinus (354-430) als bisschop van Hippo Regius mensen uit alle lagen van de bevolking te boeien. Bijna veertig jaar lang heeft hij gepreekt. Dit boek bevat drie preken waarin een voorgelezen tekst behandeld wordt uit het bijbelboek Handelingen van de Apostelen. Door hun onderlinge verschillen laten de teksten uiteenlopende aspecten zien van Augustinus als predikant en zielzorger. Naast de Nederlandse vertaling is ook de originele tekst opgenomen. Daardoor kan deze uitgave ook worden gebruikt in het voortgezet of hoger onderwijs. Dat zou Augustinus veel plezier doen. Hij was namelijk een uitstekend leraar, die populair was bij de vele mensen die in Hippo naar hem kwamen luisteren. Augustinus achtte zijn publiek hoog. Hij was ervan overtuigd dat wie open staat voor wat een ander zegt en zich inspant een ander te begrijpen ook zelf vervuld is van kostbare wijsheid. Daarom kreeg deze vertaling de titel Wijsheid van leerlingen mee. Daarmee wordt vooral verwezen naar de wijsheid van Petrus en Paulus, de centrale figuren in het bijbelboek Handelingen. Maar de titel verwijst ook naar Augustinus zelf: hij voelde zich niet alleen leraar maar ook altijd leerling.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Would probably read it again at some point.
