Certaines nouvelles nous plongent dans le malaise quand d'autres flirtent avec le fantastique. Bégout invente ici un ton, qu'il qualifie de "post-gothique". Dans ces récits, l'effroi, le mal, la terreur n'expriment pas seulement la fragilité psychologique des personnages face aux forces des ténèbres, mais aussi le potentiel de nuisance de l'époque. Ses vampires prennent la forme d'appareils, de produits, d'architectures mais aussi de représentations sociales, d'injonctions et de tics de langage. Bruce Bégout traque les démons non pas dans les châteaux hantés, les ruines, les églises, les forêts et les cimetières mais dans les parkings, les centres commerciaux, les banlieues pavillonnaires, la suburbia mondiale.
