Overview: The Fall/Winter 2011 issue of the Journal of International Affairs critically examines the forces of control at work in authoritarian states and how they endure despite the modern wave of political pluralization. How is it that such governments continue to wield power and control the reins of the state? Although the centralization of state power arises in different places for different reasons, similarities emerge in the ways that states attempt to boost internal legitimacy, exploit open economic networks, leverage international institutions, co-opt the media and stifle dissent. This issue explores these common themes, and, by viewing these regimes from the inside out, yields important insights about the role that authoritarian governments play on the world stage.

Really enjoyed this one. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Will be looking for more from this author.

An average read for me. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Just right down the middle.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
