Overview: ¿Cómo estudiar las relaciones entre estructura y superestructura? ¿Qué significa analizar el arte como parte de la producción social de lo simbólico? Para responder, se examinan los obstáculos teóricos y metodológicos colocados por las estéticas idealistas, por ciertas concepciones del vínculo arte-sociedad formuladas por historiadores (Panofsky, Francastel, Hauser) y por sociólogos positivistas (Silbermann, Escarpit, Kavolis). Se discuten luego los principales modelos de articulación de la estructura y la superestructura, sus cambios recientes por la renovación epistemológica del marxismo y por aportes de otras ciencias sociales. Esta reelaboración teórica es confrontada con investigaciones sociológicas sobre el arte, y, especialmente, es puesta a prueba en una investigación cumplida por el autor: un extenso capítulo, que estudia por primera vez las estrategias culturales del desarrollismo económico en América Latina y su conexión con las vanguardias artísticas en la década del sesenta, indaga en qué medida puede explicarse desde determinaciones colectivas la innovación individual y grupal. Al tratar de que una ciencia que estudia la regularidad social hable sobre experiencias de ruptura, plantea si es posible pensar juntos las estructuras y los acontecimientos, la objetividad y la subjetividad. La sociología del arte es así un espacio ejemplar para entender los nexos entre producción y simbolización, la manera en que cada clase construye y afianza su poder económico mediante la acumulación y renovación de capital simbólico. Néstor García Canclini, doctor en filosofía por las Universidades de París y La Plata (Argentina), es profesor e investigador de estética contemporánea y epistemología de las ciencias sociales en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM y en la Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia de México. Ha publicado los siguientes libros: Cortázar, una antropología poética (Buenos Aires, Nova, 1968); Arte popular y sociedad en América Latina (México, Grijalbo, 1977), y Epistemología e historia (México, UNAM, en prensa).

Glad someone recommended this to me. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Glad I picked this up.
