He has been taken from a London inn while fleeing the wrath of his former lover, Duchess Cecily, and brought to Queen Margaret's dungeon in France. She eventually forgives him and takes him back in to her bed, but their relationship does not go well from the very start. Both are unfaithful. In particular, Richard falls for Queen Margaret's young stepdaughter, Marie. Having found her own wealthy and powerful young love in Paris, the queen initially puts up with it. But upon returning after an extended stay in Paris, she catches them in bed having sex. That was the last straw and puts in motion a series of events which are to eventually lead them to separating for good
