Overview: We vinden onze held terug in de buurt van het stadje Moerdal, waar hij na het winnen van een steekspel zijn intrek heeft genomen in een herberg. Wanneer een aantal boeren de 2 andere gasten van de herberg (Ivar en Gwenda; 2 rondreizende kunstenaars) bedreigen neemt Johan het voor hen op. Het komt tot een handgemeen, dat bruusk verstoord wordt door de komst van de Soldenierskapitein van Moerdal en zijn manschappen. De kapitein steekt hierbij zijn wantrouwen naar de rode ridder niet onder stoelen of banken. Wanneer de rust is weergekeerd maakt Johan nader kennis met Gwenda en Ivar. Hij hoort er het verhaal over de draak die in het moeras huist en zijn meesteres, Wanda de heks. De draak zou mensenoffer eisen en deze werden aangeduid met een zwart kruis op de voordeur. Na zijn vertrek uit de herberg wordt Johan in een hinderlaag gelokt. Na enige schermutselingen weet hij de boeren te bedaren en verneemt er een gelijkaardig verhaal. Ter bescherming voor de draak mogen de boeren schuilen in de burcht van de Graaf. Het mysterie laat Johan nu niet meer los en hij besluit dit nader te onderzoeken...

Good, but not quite perfect. Writing is good, just wish there was a bit more depth in certain parts. Still kept my attention though. Not bad at all.

I liked it for the most part. Interesting premise and executed fairly well. Just a few slow chapters here and there. Enjoyable weekend read.

I was pleasantly surprised. I got really invested in the main character's journey. Everything just clicked for me. Will be looking for more from this author.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The writing was fine, but I didn't feel very connected to the characters. They felt a bit flat. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

An average read for me. It had some good moments, but the overall plot felt a bit disjointed in the second half. Probably won't read it again, but it was an okay way to pass the time.

I was pleasantly surprised. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Would probably read it again at some point.
