Overview: Handlingen i Sjakknovelle er lagt til en luksusdamper hvor blant annet Mirko Czentovik, verdensmester i sjakk, befinner seg. Han er på vei til Argentina hvor han for kjempehonorarer skal glitre med sin kunst. Han og den mystiske dr. B., en østerriksk flyktning som har tilegnet seg sjakkteori under fangenskap hos Hitlers gestapister, møtes til kamp ved sjakkbrettet. Sjakknovelle fra 1941 er skrevet i en tid hvor de store ideologier tørnet sammen med en slik kraft at Europa etterfølgende lå i ruiner. Stefan Zweigs dypfølte ærend i denne boken er derfor også en kritikk av ideologienes innskrenkende og dødsfarlige natur. Stefan Zweig (1881 - 1942), østerriksk forfatter og kosmpolitisk europeer, er en av de mest betydningsfulle tyskspråklige forfattere i mellomkrigstiden. Zweigs upolitiske, pasifistisk-humanistiske idealisme fikk sitt knekk med Hitlers maktovertagelse. I 1938 måtte han som jøde forlate sitt hjem i Salzburg og emigrere til England. Derfra flyktet han i 1940 til New York for året etter å slå seg ned ved Rio de Janeiro. Dypt deprimert over den politiske utviklingen i Europa begikk han her selvmord 1942.

A very satisfying read. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.

Really enjoyed this one. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
