Overview: "मस्नवी 'ज़हर-ए-इश्क़' नवाब मिर्ज़ा शौक़ लखनवी की तीन अमर मस्नवियों में से एक है। प्रेम में विछोह का ऐसा मर्मांतक वर्णन विरल है। इस पारम्परिक विषय पर उर्दू में अनेक मस्नवियाँ लिखी गई हैं लेकिन ऐसी भाव प्रवणता और हृदयग्राह्यता शायद ही कहीं और मौजूद हो। इसकी संवेदना में युवा हृदय की अभिलाषाओं का ज्वार है, अधूरे सपनों का विलाप है और प्रेम की लौ को आँधियों के क़हर से बचा पाने की विकलता है। अपनी परिणति में यह एक दुःखान्त रचना है। प्रिय मिलन से वंचित नायिका की मृत्यु हमारे मन को झकझोर देती है। मिर्ज़ा 'शौक़', नवाब वाजिदअली शाह के ज़माने के मशहूर शाइर थे। मस्नवी 'ज़हर- ए-इश्क़' की रचना 1860 ई. में हुई। इस मस्नवी का एक अन्य पाठ भी बनता है जिसमें हम उस समय के लखनऊ की सामाजिक और सांस्कृतिक परिस्थिति से रू-ब-रू हो सकते हैं। 'शौक़' का उद्देश्य समाज सुधार नहीं था, न ही उनके रसिक स्वभाव से सुधारवाद का तालमेल बैठता था। शाइर अपने प्रेम की व्यथा-कथा के निमित्त से भोग-विलास में लिप्त एक पतनोन्मुख समाज के चित्र उभारता गया है। उस दौर में लखनऊ के जीवन की यह विडम्बना थी कि मुर्गे, बटेरें आदि लड़ाने की कुरुचि नवाबों और अमीर-उमराव के प्रभाव से जन साधारण में भी पैदा हो गई थी। मुर्गे की जीत और हार जीवन-मरण का प्रश्न बन चुकी थी। मस्नवी मुर्गों की लड़ाई से ही खुलती है। शुरू में लगता है कि जैसे हम कोई नाटक पढ़ रहे हों। नाट्य-तत्त्व के साथ-साथ यहाँ हास्य-विनोद का भी समावेश है। कहानी के बीच में लखनऊ के परिवेश की झलक भी जा ब जा मिलती है। 'शौक़' ने लखनऊ में नौचन्दी के मेले, हज़रत अब्बास की दरगाह और हुसैनाबाद में लोगों के जमघट को क़रीब से देखा था। ये तमाम चित्र मस्नवी के बीच-बीच में आते हैं। "

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The author did a great job wrapping everything up at the end. No weird plot holes left behind. Worth the time and money.
