Overview: Marcos Ana (Fernando Macarro Castillo). Nació en Alconada, una pequeña aldea de Salamanca, en 1920, en el seno de una familia pobre de jornaleros del campo. Su vida ha estado marcada por una pasión constante en defensa de los oprimidos y los desheredados y una entrega absoluta a su ideal comunista. Desde su primera juventud, luchó del lado republicano, durante la guerra civil española. Al terminar ésta, en 1939 fue detenido, junto a millares de demócratas y condenado a muerte. Permaneció encarcelado durante 23 años toda su juventud y la mitad de su vida. En esa Universidad dolorosa escribió los poemas que traspasaron las cárceles y llevaron su nombre a través del mundo, contribuyendo a desencadenar una campaña de solidaridad a su favor. Fue uno de los primeros presos políticos españoles defendidos por Amnistía Internacional. Al ser liberado, en 1961, Marcos Ana recorrió Europa y gran parte de América, siendo recibido en Parlamentos, Universidades y centenares de concentraciones populares, promovieron y organizando la solidaridad con los presos políticos y su familias y denunciando las prácticas fascistas que, por entonces, se realizaban en España. Fundó y dirigió en París, hasta el final de la dictadura franquista, el Centro de Información y Solidaridad con España (CISE), que presidió Picasso. Apoyado por personalidades de la cultura y la política europeas, este Centro organizó la defensa de los derechos humanos, la acción por la Amnistía general y la ayuda moral y material a todas las víctimas de la represión política.

Good, but not quite perfect. I liked the main character, though some of the side plots were just okay. Enjoyable weekend read.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Would probably read it again at some point.

Such a great read. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. Worth the time and money.
