Overview: In her latest book, ‘Akhri Zamana’, Amna Mufti has tried to highlight the fragmentation of Pakistani society and the different realities faced by people, raising important questions about the social and political fabric of Pakistan today. Mufti painted a vivid picture of various social settings in Pakistan which included rural areas, large urban centers and militant training camps while simultaneously revealing the activities of people within these areas such as those of religious groups, different lobbies and their reactions to national and international political movements. She chose the 70s as the backdrop for her opening chapters, as that was a time when the country was relatively stable and, despite economic hardships and class differences, there was still a sense of security amongst the people. Through her characters and the issues they face, she has brought to light the fact that ordinary people are constantly having their rights infringed upon and are also constantly under threat. She has effectively depicted the actual psyche of her characters, showing the various conditions people from different walks of life face on a daily basis as well as how they react to these circumstances. The characters themselves are interesting as their realities stood poles apart and a chain of events or particular associations compelled them to cross paths. One of the main characters is a girl named Raheela, who came from a well-do-day family. She is fond of reading old-fashioned books on revolutionary heroes and Khalid, whose father is a servant in her home, is deeply impressed by her wisdom and way of thinking. As a result, Khalid also tries his hand at heroism while following the romantic thoughts of Raheela, which ultimately leads him down the path of militancy. ‘Akhri Zamana’ raised some crucial questions about societal issues like why people were exploited and killed in the name of a sacred cause. It also touched upon the promotion of peace and democracy and the role of state actors and non-state actors through the narration of important political as well as social events that took place over the last two decades in Pakistan. Other issues brought up over the course of the story are the conflict between the elderly generation and domestic culture today, reading habits in children and how they are raised in a society full of unfavorable influences.Amna Mufti has added an impressive piece of fiction to Urdu literature, which reflects the quality of her deep observations.

I have mixed feelings about this one. Some parts were interesting, while others were a bit of a slog to get through. It's fine if you have nothing else to read.

Really enjoyed this one. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Would probably read it again at some point.
