Overview: वाट तुडवताना' हे रूढ अर्थाने आत्मकथन आहे; पण आत्मचरित्राची समग्रता त्यात नाही. अर्थात लेखकालाही ते अभिप्रेत नाही. श्री. उत्तम कांबळे यांच्या विद्याजीवनाची जडणघडण ज्यातून कळते, असे हे विशिष्ट क्षेत्रीय आत्मकथन आहे. ......... या विद्याजीवनाचे दोन पदर आहेत. एक : औपचारिक शिक्षणाचा व दुसरा : ग्रंथप्रेमाचा. याचीच परिणती पत्रकार, लेखक, संपादक, वक्ता, तत्त्वचिंतक, संघटक, पुरोगामी चळवळीतील कार्यकर्ता वगैरे होण्यात झालेली आहे. विद्याजीवनाचा हा समृद्ध आविष्कार आहे. जन्मवंश आणि विद्यावंश, अशी विभागणी करून माणसाच्या आत्मचरित्राचा विचार करावा लागतो. सामाजिक संरचनेमुळे असा विचार करणे भाग पडते, हे उघडच आहे. काही व्यक्तींच्या बाबतीत जन्मवंश आणि विद्यावंश यांच्यात एकध्रुवीय एकात्मता आढळते, तर काहींच्या बाबतीत द्विध्रुवात्मक विरोध आढळतो. श्री. कांबळे यांच्या संदर्भात हा विरोध स्पष्ट आहे. सात पिढयांमध्ये कोणी शाळेची पायरी न चढलेल्या जन्मवंशात कांबळे यांचा जन्म झालेला. अठराविश्वे दारिद्रयाचा मिट्ट काळोख भोवती दाटलेला. सामाजिक संरचनेत प्रत्येक क्षेत्रात अधिकारवंचितता, ही या जन्मवंशाची काही परिमाणे आहेत. वडील जरी मध्य प्रदेशातील सागर येथे महार रेजिमेंटमध्ये शिपाई होते, तरी ते निरक्षरच होते. दारिद्रयातला संसार चालवताना ईला फारच कसरत करावी लागायची. दहा पैशांचे गोडे तेल आणि एका आण्याची तूरडाळ ती दोन वेळा पुरवायची. एक दिवाभर रॉकेल दोन रात्री वापरायचे, डोक्याला लावायचं तेल, पाचशे एक ब्रॅंडचा साबण वर्षातून एखाद्या दिवशी सणावाराला दिसायचा.लेखकाच्या विद्यावंशाचा विचार केला तर अनेक गोष्टी स्पष्ट होतात. या विद्यावंशाची नाळ गौतम बुद्ध, महाराष्ट्रीय संत, महात्मा जोतिराव फुले, डॉ. बाबासाहेब आंबेडकर, महात्मा गांधी प्रभृती महात्म्यांशी जोडली जाणे स्वाभाविक आहे. कारण या महानुभावांनीच आत्मभान, समाजभान जागवले, हे लेखकाने कृतज्ञतापूर्वक नमूद केलेच आहे; पण तो पुढचा भाग झाला. बालवयात पुस्तकांची ओढ वाटावी, खाऊपेक्षा पुस्तक प्रिय वाटावे, ही आंतरिक ऊर्मी म्हटली पाहिजे आणि ही ऊर्मी जोपासण्याचे काम जीव गहाण ठेवून 'जादूचा राक्षस' आणि 'शनिमहात्म्य' ही चार-चार आण्यांची पुस्तके घेऊन देणार्या ईने केले. लेखकाच्या औपचारिक शिक्षणाबाबतही ईने हीच वृत्ती ठेवली.या पायावरच लेखकाच्या विद्याजीवनाची इमारत उभी राहिली. जीवनाच्या वाटचालीत भेटलेल्या असंख्य सज्जनांच्या सहवासाने आणि असंख्य ग्रंथांच्या वाचनाने या जीवनाला पैलू पडत गेले. या विद्याजीवनाच्या उभारणीसाठी लेखकाने वाटेल तेवढे कष्ट घेतले. काही कामांनी तर मनस्वी आनंदही दिला. ज्या कामात कारागिरी, कौशल्य यांच्या वापराचा प्रत्यय यायचा, ती कामे आपल्याला यायलाच हवीत, अशी जिज्ञासाजन्य जिद्दही वाटायची. पण लेखकाची आंतरिक ओढ होती ती ज्ञानाकडे. या वाटचालीतच तो कथा, कविता लिहू लागला. यामुळे शब्दांच्या अंत:स्फूर्त प्रेमामुळे वाचनाच्या माध्यमातून लेखकाने जी शब्दसाधना केलेली होती, तिचे हे फळ होते. मराठी साहित्यातील सर्वच महत्त्वपूर्ण पुस्तकांचे वाचन केले. प्राचीन काळापासूनचे महत्त्वाचे ग्रंथ निमित्तानिमित्ताने वाचले. भाषा, शब्द यांचे महत्त्व जाणून त्यांचे बळ वाढविण्याचा मन:पूर्वक प्रयत्न केला. या शब्दसत्तेमुळे स्वत:ला एक ओळख प्राप्त होत होती. आत्मविश्वास येत होता. लेखकानेच एके ठिकाणी म्हटल्याप्रमाणे पुस्तक वाचताना मला स्वत:ला खूप छोटे अगदी सरपटणारा प्राणी झाल्यासारखं वाटायचं. पुस्तक वाचू लागलो, की आपला आकार वाढतोय, सरपटण्याएएवजी आपण चालू लागतो, असं वाटायचं. शब्दसत्तेच्या संदर्भात अणुरणिया थोकड्या कोणत्याही माणसाचा हा आकाशाएवढा अनुभव असतो. यामुळे शब्द हे रत्नांचे धन वाटणे, शब्द हे शस्त्र वाटणे ओघानेच आले. 'ग्रंथ आणि माणसं एकाच वेळी वाचत जाणं अतिशय आनंददायी असतं,' असे लेखकाने म्हटले आहे.पत्रकाराचे शब्द जेव्हा समाज हलवतात, समाजातील माणुसकी जागी करतात, तेव्हाचा आनंद अवर्णनीय, याचे भान ठेवणारे लेखक शब्दसत्ता आणि पत्रकारिता यांचे नातेच स्पष्ट करतात. हुतात्मा बारपटे यांच्या स्मारकाच्या बांधकामावर त्यांची पत्नीच मजूर म्हणून जात होती. मुलगा बांधकामावर वॉचमन म्हणून काम करीत असे. या हकिगतीची लेखकाने कोल्हापूर 'सकाळ'मध्ये बातमी दिली. परिणामत: माजी मंत्री राजारामबापू पाटील यांनी त्या महिलेला घर बांधून दिले. माजी पंतप्रधान चंद्रशेखर यांच्या हस्ते घराचे उदघाटन झाले. एका वेटर असलेल्या एम. ए., बी. एड. युवकाची हृदयद्रावक कहाणी प्रसद्ध होताच त्याला नोकरी मिळणे, शेती खात्यातील एका चालकाच्या पत्नीचे सर्वांगीण शोषण यासंबंधीची वार्ता प्रसद्ध होताच तिला नोकरी मिळणे, हे वृत्तपत्रांतील शब्दांना प्राप्त झालेले बळ शब्दसत्तेचे स्वरूप स्पष्ट करतात. बातमी प्रसद्ध करताना होणार्या गफलती, चुकीचा मजकूर पुरवल्यामुळे तत्संबंधित बातमीमुळे संबंधितांवर होणारा अन्याय, याबाबतही लेखक संवेदनशील असल्यामुळे हळहळतो आणि आपल्याला शब्दसामर्थ्याची दुसरी बाजूही कळते. चालेन तेवढया पायाखालच्या जमिनीतून वाट निर्माण करणे आणि आत्मसामर्थ्य कमावत कमावत ती तुडविणे, हा लेखकाबाबत पाचवा पुरुषार्थ म्हटले पाहिजे. ग्रंथांनी, माणसांनी हे बळ पुरविले. बळ स्वीकारण्याचे सामर्थ्य लेखकापाशी बीजभूत होतेच. पेपर विकता विकता एक दिवस संपादक होण्याचे स्वप्न पाहणार्या लेखकाची स्वीकारशीलता किती तीव्र असेल, याची आपण कल्पना करू शकतो.या संपूर्ण आत्मकथनात साहित्य, तत्त्वज्ञान, धर्म, समाजशास्त्र अशा विविध विषयांवरील मराठी, इंग्रजी अशा शेकडो ग्रंथांचे संदर्भ येतात. जगातल्या उत्तमोत्तम लेखकांचे हे संदर्भ लेखकाच्या हाती एक महत्त्वाची शब्दसत्ता प्रदान करतात. शब्द माणसाला सर्व प्रकारच्या बंधनातून मुक्त करतात. जगातल्या सर्व महान पुरुषांनी आपल्याला शब्दांद्वारेच मुक्त केल्याचे अनेक दाखले मिळतात. शब्दांद्वारा स्वातंत्र्य प्राप्त करून घेणार्या माणसाच्या ठायी शब्दसत्तेद्वारा मानवाचे सर्वंकष कल्याण व्हावे...

Finished it in a couple of days. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.
