Zehntausende, die so denken, ziehen daraufhin in die Fremde, um als Freiwillige ihren Teil zu diesem Ringen beizutragen. Es fällt nicht schwer, die Parallelen zwischen dem Spanischen Bürgerkrieg und den aktuellen Geschehnissen in der Ukraine zu sehen. Wobei die Unterschiede bei historischen Vergleichen mindestens so wichtig sind wie die In Spanien zerfleischte sich eine Nation, die Ukraine ist das Opfer eines Angriffskriegs. Trotzdem lohnt es sich, gewisse Ähnlichkeiten aufzuzeigen, weil es einen überraschenden Zugang zur Vergangenheit öffnen kann. In beiden Fällen handelt es sich um Konflikte, die weit über das eigentliche Kampfgeschehen hinausweisen. Damals wie heute wurde in Europas Hauptstädten diskutiert, ob man Waffen in das Kriegsgebiet liefern sollte, auch die Schreckensvision einer Eskalation stand im Raum. Im Spanischen Bürgerkrieg weigerten sich die Demokratien schließlich, die Republik militärisch zu unterstützen. Die Putschisten um General Francisco Franco dagegen erhielten von Adolf Hitler und Benito Mussolini großzügige Waffenhilfe. Der demokratischen Regierung blieb nichts anderes übrig, als sich mit der diktatorischen Sowjetunion zu verbünden. Auch aus diesem Grund zeichnen wir auf den folgenden Seiten ein nuancierteres Bild des Spanischen Bürgerkriegs, als mancher erwarten würde. Trotz aller anfänglicher Euphorie – am Ende stand tiefste Ernüchterung. Niemand hat Franco und seinen selbsterklärten Kreuzzug gegen den sozialen und kulturellen Wandel aufgehalten. Stattdessen konnten die faschistischen Diktatoren in Spanien ihre neuesten Waffen testen. Aus der Perspektive der Nachgeborenen besitzt der Bürgerkrieg eine weitere tragische Dimension, wurde er doch zur Generalprobe für den Zweiten Weltkrieg. Vor allem aber hatte er tiefgreifende Folgen für Spanien. Wer verstehen will, was das Land und seine Menschen heute bewegt, der muss sich mit diesem Konflikt beschäftigen. Und mit seinem Erbe, das die Spanier bis heute spaltet.
