Sie sollten vielmehr eines der schönsten spätmittelalterlichen Gebäude in ganz England King's College Chapel in der Universitätsstadt Cambridge. Schaut man sich die gotische Kapelle von außen genau an, dann erkennt man eine feine Linie, die sich durch das Gemäuer zieht, ein Wechsel von hellem zu dunklem Sandstein, mehr ist es nicht. Doch darin spiegelt sich das ganze Drama, das wir Ihnen in diesem Heft präsentieren. Die unscheinbare Linie erzählt von einem König, der den Verstand verliert, von Verrätern und Wendehälsen, Triumphen und Rückschlägen, von plötzlichen Todesfällen und heimtückischen Morden. Sie erzählt eine Geschichte, die so spektakulär ist, dass man sie für die Handlung eines Romans halten könnte, wenn man es nicht besser wüsste. Nicht zufällig haben die Rosenkriege die erfolgreiche Serie "Game of Thrones" inspiriert. Als König Heinrich VI. an einem Hochsommertag im Jahr 1446 den Grundstein für die Kapelle seines Colleges legte, kriselte es bereits im Inselreich. Sieben Jahre später stürzte der schwache Herrscher in geistige Umnachtung – und seine Dynastie geriet vollends ins Wanken. 1461 wurde Heinrich schließlich von seinen Gegnern abgesetzt. Als die Arbeiter in Cambridge davon erfuhren, packten sie ihre Sachen und hinterließen eine Bauruine. Ausgerechnet Richard III., jener schurkenhafte Herzog aus dem Hause York, der sich gut 20 Jahre später den Thron vermutlich durch einen Kindermord sicherte (siehe Seite 108), befahl, die Kapelle zu vollenden. Nur wurde nun ein dunklerer Stein benutzt, die vielsagende Linie im Mauerwerk des Gotteshauses nahm Gestalt an. Die stumme Zeugin einer blutigen Epoche. König Richard führte Heinrichs Lieblingsprojekt auch deshalb weiter, weil er dadurch seiner Herrschaft mehr Legitimation verleihen wollte. Derselbe Grund motivierte Henry Tudor, der Richard 1485 auf dem Schlachtfeld besiegte und so die Rosenkriege zu einem Ende brachte, den Ausbau fortzusetzen. Die letzten Arbeiten an der Kapelle wurden unter dessen Sohn ausgeführt. An der prunkvollen Trennwand zum Chor sind noch immer die Initialen von Heinrich VIII. und seiner Frau Anne Boleyn zu ein Liebesbeweis, in Holz geschnitzt, fertiggestellt in jenem Jahr, als der Bräutigam der Braut den Kopf abschlagen ließ. Daneben prangt die Tudor- Rose – jenes propagandistische Meisterwerk, mit dem die neue Dynastie die Embleme der verfeindeten Häuser York und Lancaster symbolisch versöhnte. Unter diesem Zeichen tat England die ersten Schritte auf dem Weg zur Großmacht. Auch das ist eine spektakuläre Geschichte. Doch die hat GEOEPOCHE schon erzählt.
