Overview: Saatananpalvonta saapui suomalaisen uutismedian otsikoihin 1990-luvulla. Epämääräinen nuoria houkutteleva ”kultti” sai kasvot vuonna 1998, kun Hyvinkäällä paljastui raaka paloittelusurma, josta tiedotusvälineissä puhuttiin saatananpalvojien rituaalimurhana. Seuraavina vuosina koko maata koetellut hautausmaavandalismin aalto vahvisti käsityksiä laajalle levinneestä uskonnollisesta ryhmästä.Titus Hjelm tutkii väitöskirjassaan ”Saatananpalvonta, media ja suomalainen yhteiskunta” vuosien 1990–2002 aikana suomalaisessa uutismediassa rakentunutta kuvaa saatananpalvonnasta. Hän kuvailee uutisissa hegemonisiksi muodostuneita tapoja käsittää saatananpalvonta ja prosessia, jonka seurauksena juuri tietyt tulkinnat saivat ensisijaisen aseman ilmiön kuvaajina. Tämän lisäksi hän valottaa saatananpalvontauutisoinnin synnyn taustoja ja lähteitä ja sijoittaa ne laajempaan yhteiskunnalliseen viitekehykseen. Saatananpalvonnan mediakuvaa lähestytään sosiaalisten ongelmien tutkimuksen lähtökohdista käsin, jolloin huomio kiinnittyy siihen kuinka media omalta osaltaan rakentaa saatananpalvontaa sosiaalisena ongelmana. Tutkimuksen lähteenä on yli tuhat lehtijuttua sanomalehdistä ympäri maan sekä radio- ja tv-uutismateriaalia.Suomalaisen uutismedian saatananpalvontauutisoinnin voi tiivistää ytimekkäästi: saatananpalvonta on sosiaalinen ongelma. Rikollinen toiminta, kuten saatananpalvonnan seurauksena esitetty hautausmaavandalismi ja toisaalta jokaisen ilmiöön mukaan joutuneen samanaikainen uhristatus kvalifioivat saatananpalvonnan sosiaaliseksi ongelmaksi, jos mediaa pitää todellisuuden peilinä. Saatananpalvonta sosiaalisena ongelmana taas purkautuu yhtäältä ensisijaisesti nuorten ilmiöksi ja toisaalta uskonnolliseksi ilmiöksi. Uutisoinnin keskipisteessä ovat oletetusti uskonnollisesti motivoituneet nuorten ryhmät. Nämä kolme sisällöllistä näkökulmaa (nuoret, rikollisuus/uhristatus, uskonnollinen eetos) ja niiden vuorovaikutus ovat saatananpalvontauutisoinnin ytimessä: niiden kautta rakentuu vastaus kysymykseen, mitä saatananpalvonta on uutisdiskurssien esittämänä. Took me a few chapters to get into it, but it was worth it. It held my attention, even if a few things were a little predictable. A solid 4 stars from me.
