Overview: La storia si apre nel casinò di Narbon, una piccola cittadina. Il barone Massimo Riber è impegnato in una partita a chemin-de-fer, ma, perso tutto il denaro, decide di andare via. Giunge lì anche l'avvocato Bonard, persona molto nota ai cittadini per la sua magnanimità e buon cuore. Riber fugge in periferia con l'intenzione di farla finita, ma, prima che potesse ammazzarsi, Bonard e il suo segretario, Regan, lo fermano, gettando la maschera: Bonard è uno strozzino che si ammanta dell'aria di buon samaritano, e Regan gli fa da scherano. Riber deve dei soldi a Bonard, che lo convince a rubare i gioielli di sua moglie Luisa, meno giovane di lui. Riber compie il furto e porta i gioielli allo strozzino, che però svaluta enormemente il valore dei preziosi e concede una somma irrisoria al barone, che, inorridito e pentito di ciò che ha fatto, va via, ma, mentre cammina per il parco, rimuginando sulla sua sorte, viene aggredito da Diabolik, che aveva assistito alla ricettazione dei gioielli. Riber sviene dalla paura, e Diabolik lo deruba del poco denaro che aveva. Nello stesso momento, nell'ufficio di Bonard, irrompe Regan, che pretende di ricevere la metà del maltolto, ma Bonard rifiuta e ne scaturisce una lotta in cui Bonard viene ucciso da Regan, che non perde tempo ad impadronirsi dei gioielli. Regan però è ignaro del fatto che Diabolik ha visto tutto. Il criminale insegue l'assassino con l'intenzione di impadronirsi dei gioielli, ma una ronda lo fa desistere, per il momento.Il giorno dopo, per non destare sospetti, Regan si reca a lavoro come sempre e si ferma a fare colazione al bar. D'un tratto scorge dalla vetrina proprio Bonard e, incredulo e impaurito, sviene. Viene portato nell'ufficio dello stesso Bonard, dove "l'avvocato" lo fa rinvenire. Regan si scaglia ancora una volta su Bonard, ma questa volta ha la peggio, e capisce la triste verità: Bonard è Diabolik, che vuole i gioielli.Intanto Ginko è ancora perso nei rapporti sulla fuga di Diabolik, quando Gustavo Garian sopraggiunge e lo invita a cena ad un night club, così per regalargli un momento di tregua dal lavoro. Al night conoscono la bellissima ballerina messicana Diana Cruz. quando però Ginko è costretto a lasciare il locale perché è stata denunciata la scomparsa del barone Riber, Diana Cruz ha un malore e sparisce.Diabolik e Regan, intanto, giungono nel campanile della chiesetta del paese, dove Regan ha nascosto i gioielli. Regan sale fino a raggiungere la campana, ma, intuendo che Diabolik possa giocargli un tiro mancino, svuota il cofanetto e si nasconde i preziosi addosso, lanciando lo scrigno al criminale, che, in un attimo, fa cadere la scala e scappa. Regan si trova quindi bloccato sul batacchio della campana e lì vi rimane tutta la notte. Il giorno dopo, durante la messa, cui partecipano Ginko, Luisa Riber e lo stesso Diabolik sotto mentite spoglie, Regan muore sfracellato dal batacchio della campana e i gioielli piovono di sotto. Ginko, che era lì per indagare sulla scomparsa di Riber, si ritrova a dover interrogare Bonard, sul perché il suo segretario avesse addosso i gioielli rubati della Riber. Diabolik fa credere a Ginko di non saperne nulla e, poco dopo, nell'ufficio di Bonard, mentre fruga tra le carte dello strozzino, riceve la visita di Payot, un povero poliziotto che ha bisogno di soldi. Diabolik, magnanimamente, gli concede la somma di cui ha bisogno, per levarselo velocemente di torno; poi corre al tribunale per rubare i gioielli Riber dall'archivio reperti. Ginko si reca da Bonard e scopre, nell'aiuola, il cadavere del vero avvocato. Intuendo tutta la verità, corre al tribunale, dove sa essersi recato il suo uomo, e lo fa mettere sotto assedio. Diabolik si vede perduto, ma in suo aiuto giunge proprio Payot che lo fa passare di nascosto dalla porta di servizio.Il caso non è ancora chiuso: Massimo Riber non è stato ancora trovato, ma Gustavo Garian riconosce nelle foto dei gioielli rubati una spilla che aveva visto addosso a Diana Cruz, quindi, ispettore e aiutante vanno a casa della ballerina, dove trovano il barone, amante di Diana cui aveva regalato la spilla.
