Overview: Anna Ahmatova (oik. Gorenko) syntyi 1889 ja kuoli 1966 ja kirjoitti yli kuudenkymmenen vuoden ajan. Ahmatova syntyi lähellä Odessaa, mutta muutti jo varhain Pietariin, jonka tunsi kotikaupungikseen. Hän kuvasi paljon Pietari-Leningradia ja sen muuttumista runoissaan. Alkuaikojen menestys muuttui myöhemmin vaikeuksiksi, ja hän sai kokea niin julkaisukiellot kuin vankileirien uhankin. Esimerkiksi runoelma Requiem oli Neuvostoliitossa kielletty vuosikymmenten ajan. Kaiken kaikkiaan Ahmatovan elämä ja runous kietoutuivat tiiviisti yhteen hänen kotimaansa poliittisiin mullistuksiin.Kirjailija Marja-Leena Mikkola on koonnut ja suomentanut valikoiman, joka perustuu vuonna 2006 venäjäksi ilmestyneeseen laitokseen. Osa runoista on julkaistu vuonna 1992 ilmestyneessä kokoelmassa Runoja, mutta mukana on nyt myös aiemmin suomentamattomia runoja. A very satisfying read. I loved how the story unfolded. It kept me guessing without being too confusing. A solid 5/5 for me.
