Overview: Longtemps, la Côte-d'Ivoire a été la vitrine des anciennes colonies du pré carré français, sa plus belle réussite. Indépendant depuis 1960, mais resté étroitement lié à Paris, le pays des éléphants a bénéficié d'une longue période de stabilité, sous le règne du père de la nation, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, décédé en 1993. Montré en exemple en Afrique de l'Ouest, ce modèle a viré au cauchemar quelques années seulement après sa mort. C'est la chronique de cette tourmente, aussi précise que documentée, que propose Thomas Hofnung dans ce livre nourri de nombreuses enquêtes sur le terrain. En septembre 2002, des rebelles s'emparent de la moitié nord du pays, après avoir tenté de renverser le président Laurent Gbagbo, élu en 2000. Malgré d'innombrables tentatives de médiation internationale, il faudra attendre l'automne 2010 pour organiser un nouveau scrutin présidentiel. Censée régler la crise, cette élection l'a au contraire exacerbée, Laurent Gbagbo refusant de reconnaître sa défaite face à Alassane Ouattara. Seule l'intervention militaire décisive de la France, pourtant la moins bien placée en tant qu'ancienne puissance coloniale, a permis en avril 2011 de dénouer (provisoirement?) une crise qui a fait des milliers de victimes. I was pleasantly surprised. It has a good balance of dialogue and description. Everything felt like it moved at the right speed. A solid 5/5 for me.

It was just alright. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. Might work better for someone else, just wasn't completely for me.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The pacing was spot on and the characters felt real. I didn't find myself getting bored at any point. Will be looking for more from this author.

Glad someone recommended this to me. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. A solid 5/5 for me.
