Overview: Eindruck, den Stefan Zweig 1936 von Brasilien gewann, bestimmte die folgenden: das Land hatte eine Pathoswirkung auf ihn - es rief eine romantische Reaktion hervor, ein seelisches Wohlbefinden in einer traumhaft wirkenden Landschaft. Brasilien und seine Menschen schienen ihm in völliger Harmonie übereinzustimmen, die durch die großen, vor allem sozialen Gegensätze durchaus nicht beeinträchtigt wurde: "heller scheint dem Gast hier das Leben mit der helleren Sonne". Seinen Dank stattete er dem "wundervollen Land Brasilien" vor allem mit dieser Monographie ab, die freilich mehr seiner exotischen und pittoresken Eigenart als seiner damals gerade aufstrebenden, den Brasilianern so wichtigen technischen Entwicklung gewidmet ist. Für Stefan Zweig war es ein Land der Zukunft; ein halbes Jahrhundert später wirkt der Satz "Brasilien wird immer eine Zukunft haben" angesichts des Kahlschlags im Paradies sehr viel problematischer. Mitten im Zweiten Weltkrieg, auf dem Höhepunkt der Selbstzerstörung Europas, der gesamten abendländischen Zivilisation durch ideologischen Fanatismus verweist der Dichter auf Brasilien als Gegenmodell: "... Europa hat unermeßlich mehr Tradition und weniger Zukunft, Brasilien weniger Vergangenheit und mehr Zukunft!"

Pretty good overall. The middle dragged a tiny bit, but the ending totally made up for it. A solid 4 stars from me.

Honestly one of the better books I've read lately. The writing style is very engaging. It’s easy to follow but still has a lot of depth. Definitely recommend it if you like this genre.

An average read for me. It felt a bit repetitive in the middle. Could have been shorter. Just right down the middle.
