Overview: जब नमक का नया विभाग बना और इश्वरप्रदत्त वस्तु के व्यवहार करने का निषेध हो गया तो लोग चोरी-छिपे इसका व्यापार करने लगे। अनेक प्रकार के छल-प्रपंचों का सूत्रपात हुआ। कोई घूस से काम निकालता था, तो कोई चालाकी से। अधिकारियों के पौ-बारह थे। पटवारीगिरी का सर्वसम्मानित पद छोड़-छोड़कर लोग इस विभाग की बरकंदाज़ी करते थे। इसके दारोगा पद के लिए तो वकीलों का भी जी ललचाता था। यह वह समय था, जब अँग्रेज़ी शिक्षा और ईसाई मत को लोग एक ही वस्तु समझते थे। फ़ारसी का प्राबल्य था। प्रेम की कथाएँ और श्रृंगार रस के काव्य पढ़कर फ़ारसीदाँ लोग सर्वोच्च पदों पर नियुक्त हो जाया करते थे। मुंशी वंशीधर भी ‘ज़ुलेख़ा’ की विरहकथा समाप्त करके ‘शीरी’ और ‘फ़रहाद’ के प्रेम-वृत्तान्त को ‘नल’ और ‘नील’ की लड़ाई और अमेरिका के आविष्कार से अधिक महत्त्व की बातें समझते हुए रोज़गार की खोज में निकले। उनके पिता एक अनुभवी पुरुष थे। समझाने लगे, "बेटा! घर की दुर्दशा देख रहे हो। ऋण के बोझ से दबे हुए हैं। लड़कियाँ हैं, वे घास-फूस की तरह बढ़ती चली जाती हैं। मैं कगारे पर का वृक्ष हो रहा हूँ, न मालूम कब गिर पड़ूँ! अब तुम्हीं घर के मालिक-मुख़्तार हो। नौकरी में ओहदे की ओर ध्यान मत देना, यह तो पीर का मज़ार है। निगाह चढ़ावे और चादर पर रखनी चाहिए। ऐसा काम ढूँढना जहाँ कुछ ऊपरी आय हो। मासिक वेतन तो पूर्णमासी का चाँद है, जो एक दिन दिखाई देता है और घटते-घटते लुप्त हो जाता है, ऊपरी आय बहता हुआ स्रोत है, जिससे सदैव प्यास बुझती है। वेतन मनुष्य देता है, इसी से उसमें वृद्धि नहीं होती। ऊपरी आमदनी ईश्वर देता है, इसी से उसकी बरकत होती है। तुम स्वयं विद्वान् हो, तुम्हें क्या समझाऊँ। इस विषय में विवेक की बड़ी आवश्यकता है। मनुष्य को देखो, उसकी आवश्यकता को देखो और अवसर को देखो, उसके उपरांत जो उचित समझो, करो। गरज़ वाले आदमी के साथ कठोरता करने में लाभ ही लाभ है। लेकिन बेगरज़ को दाँव पर पाना ज़रा कठिन है। इन बातों को गाँठ में बाँध लो। यह मेरी जन्म भर की कमाई है।"-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------प्रेमचंद का जन्म 31 जुलाई, 1880 को वाराणसी के निकट लम्ही ग्राम में हुआ था। उनके पिता अजायब राय पोस्ट ऑफ़िस में क्लर्क थे। वे अजायब राय व आनन्दी देवी की चौथी संतान थे। पहली दो लड़कियाँ बचपन में ही चल बसी थीं। तीसरी लड़की के बाद वे चौथे स्थान पर थे। माता पिता ने उनका नाम धनपत राय रखा।सात साल की उम्र से उन्होंने एक मदरसे से अपनी पढ़ाई-लिखाई की शुरुआत की जहाँ उन्होंने एक मौलवी से उर्दू और फ़ारसी सीखी। जब वे केवल आठ साल के थे तभी लम्बी बीमारी के बाद आनन्दी देवी का स्वर्गवास हो गया। उनके पिता ने दूसरी शादी कर ली परंतु प्रेमचंद को नई माँ से कम ही प्यार मिला। धनपत को अकेलापन सताने लगा।किताबों में जाकर उन्हें सुकून मिला। उन्होंने कम उम्र में ही उर्दू, फ़ारसी और अँग्रेज़ी साहित्य की अनेकों किताबें पढ़ डालीं। कुछ समय बाद उन्होंने वाराणसी के क्वींस कॉलेज में दाख़िला ले लिया।1895 में पंद्रह वर्ष की आयु में उनका विवाह कर दिया गया। तब वे नवीं कक्षा में पढ़ रहे थे। लड़की एक सम्पन्न ज़मीदार परिवार से थी और आयु में उनसे बढ़ी थी। प्रेमचंद ने पाया कि वह स्वभाव से बहुत झगड़ालू है और कोई ख़ास सुंदर भी नहीं है। उनका यह विवाह सफ़ल नहीं रहा। उन्होंने विधवा-विवाह का समर्थन करते हुए 1906 में बाल-विधवा शिवरानी देवी से दूसरा विवाह कर लिया। उनकी तीन संताने हुईं–श्रीपत राय, अमृत राय और कमला देवी श्रीवास्तव।1897 में अजायब राय भी चल बसे। प्रेमचंद ने जैसे-तैसे दूसरे दर्जे से मैट्रिक की परीक्षा पास की। तंगहाली और गणित में कमज़ोर होने की वजह से पढ़ाई बीच में ही छूट गई। बाद में उन्होंने प्राइवेट से इंटर व बी.ए. की परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण की।वाराणसी के एक वकील के बेटे को 5 रु. महीना पर ट्यूशन पढ़ाकर ज़िंदगी की गाड़ी आगे बढ़ी। कुछ समय बाद 18 रु. महीना की स्कूल टीचर की नौकरी मिल गई। सन् 1900 में सरकारी टीचर की नौकरी मिली और रहने को एक अच्छा मकान भी मिल गया।धनपत राय ने सबसे पहले उर्दू में ‘नवाब राय’ के नाम से लिखना शुरू किया। बाद में उन्होंने हिंदी में प्रेमचंद के नाम से लिखा। प्रेमचंद ने 14 उपन्यास, 300 से अधिक कहानियाँ, नाटक, समीक्षा, लेख, सम्पादकीय व संस्मरण आदि लिखे। उनकी कहानियों का अनुवाद विश्व की अनेक भाषाओं में हुआ है। प्रेमचंद ने मुंबई में रहकर फ़िल्म ‘मज़दूर’ की पटकथा भी लिखी।प्रेमचंद काफ़ी समय से पेट के अलसर से बीमार थे, जिसके कारण उनका स्वास्थ्य दिन-पर-दिन गिरता जा रहा था। इसी के चलते 8 अक्तूबर, 1936 को क़लम के इस सिपाही ने सब से विदा ले ली।
